obviously, it is basically fucked up to mandate that an establishment is forbidden from feeding any one group of people.

but then, you're right- the thread author could be praising some wiggity-wack effort to slow down obesity, or maybe they're praising the states attempt at trying to balance out the prohibitions on feeding the homeless in orlando and elsewhere. opposite extremes.

actually, supposedly, the author of the bill was trying to make a point, since mississippi is like, the 2nd most obese state or something, and it never made the floor or anything.

10. Good....I think it is emblematic of the nastiest, most ignorant, and
punitive nature of those on the RW.... Scary too, to think there are some that would support such. Sort of makes it easier to understand how some could support involuntary sterilization for some or the horrible syphilis study that allowed those infected to go untreated among African Americans in the South.

4. This won't solve the obesity problem
Besides, not all food establishments are the same--doesn't make sense to make a salad bar, for example, deny access by obese people. That being said, just as you can't legislate morality, you also can't legislate weight loss.

A weight loss program should take into account the physiology of the individual. Diets should be tailored to the individual--there is no "magic bullet" diet that will work for everyone. Often there are underlying factors (not over eating) that cause a person to be obese-the most common, I think, being hypothyroidism. Also there have been studies showing a genetic tendency to obesity. Couple this with food allergies (many of which go undetected for years-gluten allergy can be a major factor in depression, for example), food addictions (read "Sugar Blues" for more information), and lack of education and poverty--its actually a wonder that more people aren't overweight.

the author of the bill was trying to make a point, since mississippi is like, the 2nd most obese state or something, and it never made the floor or anything. this according to our local news station. i'll post the link if i find it.

maybe not...all i'm finding are articles saying it is an outrage and what not, and it seems the authors may have been serious...my local news station has been wrong before. :eyes:

i found a blog with a direct quote from Rep. Mayhall:
I called lead author, Rep. Mayhall, and asked if this was serious legislation or tongue-in-cheek to make a point. He kindly took a moment to answer my question while the legislature was in session. He said that while, regrettably, he doesn’t believe his bill will pass, this is serious. He wrote it, he said, because of the “urgency of the obesity crisis and need for government action.” He hopes it will “call attention to the serious problem of obesity and what it is costing the Medicare system.”
