Corruption in a U.S. Attorney’s Office
DEPARTMENT No Comment
BY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED February 10, 2008
.........................

The whole of Mrs. White’s affidavit can be read here:
http://harpers.org/media/image/blogs/misc/judywhiteaffidavit.pdf

Mrs. White is describing the cajoling of federal agents, including an individual named Long, who were working under the direction of Louis Franklin, the prosecutor of the Siegelman case. Franklin is the head of the criminal division for U.S. Attorney Leura Canary.

The implication of these passages is quite clear. White was being pressed to give false evidence against Siegelman in his trial in Montgomery, and was being threatened with the prospect of a corruption investigation and prosecution if he did not do so. In particular he was to have placed the initial meeting on a certain date, which the prosecutors needed to make out to sustain their case. White refused to give false evidence. The prosecution followed. These accusations, if true, amount to a corrupt manipulation of the criminal justice system, a felony.

Judy White’s affidavit provides strong evidence that the prosecutors knowingly proceeded against Siegelman on the basis of evidence or claims that they knew or should have known were false. And even more substantial evidence to the same end will very shortly appear in the media.

................

So the argument in the Judy White affidavit is that the attack on White served two purposes: first to coerce him into supplying false evidence against Siegelman, and second to score points with still more powerful figures in the state G.O.P. who were White’s enemies.

7. This is SOP
I've always believed it. Not just in regards to the Seigalman case, but in DC too. Blackmail and extortion of political leaders is standard operating procedure. This is why time after time we see Dems caving and giving into this admin. I just wish i knew what they had on Reid and Pelosie.

your Arab friends richer. You know, the Saudis that saved Bush's ass from bankruptcy. It's OK to lie and kill innocent people. It's OK to lie while destroying peoples lives. I guess giving COERCED & FALSE TESTIMONY is no longer a federal crime.
That means that anyone can make a false claim against you and you can never, ever, defend yourself.
Folks, we are witnessing the very eye-core of fascist evil. :dem:

...but also above and beyond the bounds of human decency. Evil is not a word to use lightly. However, in these circumstances, evil is precisely the word to use. Other words to use are accomplices, cowards and collaborators.

8. and 60 minutes killed the Siegelman story
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 12:21 PM by Botany
<I am fully with the Tuscaloosa News on this. In their lead editorial this morning, describing the on-going travesty of the Siegelman case, they write:

Michael Mukasey may have a distinguished career as a judge but as U.S. attorney general, he’s a loser. For all the interest he has shown in the duties of his new office, we may as well have a smiling wooden puppet seated in his chair.>

We can never stop fighting these bastards. Why this not a national story ... I don't know.

The plan .... use NSA to spy and the DoJ as muscle for the bush/Cheney mafia

Please write Don

20. Major Siegelman update...
by Larisa Alexandrovna

Okay, folks, whatever you did with your calls and emails, what I have now learned is that the finished product (finished for some time) by 60 Minutes was finally screened for CBS corporate this past Friday. Now let's not all give up and go home with a victory just yet. We have work still to do, because until the show airs, we have not yet won. I would urge you to continue to call CBS corporate expressing your interest in this story.

But for the time being, we can at least breath easier knowing that we won a small battle, if not the victory yet.

Against this backdrop, I give you the latest from the brilliant Scott Horton, who also describes yet another corrupt case by US Attorney and Rove pal Alice Martin. Most importantly, he appears to be showing the WH that the story won't die even if CBS does not run it, because someone is leaking.

10. Justice means nothing to this administration
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 01:22 PM by MissWaverly
I put this quote here because it shows that they consider truth as a marketing strategy something that can be adjusted to meet their needs.

Truth and Justice are intertwined, when you have no truth then you cannot
have justice. Our whole legal system is predicated on justice for all and the concept of "guilt" as something beyond a reasonable doubt. Political persecution served up as justice is foreign to our constitution and our legal system.

As Jeb Bush once told retired Naval Intelligence Officer Al Martin (cited in Bushwhacked, Sept. 2002, by Uri Dowbenko)...

The truth is useless. You have to understand this right now. You can't deposit the truth in a bank. You can't buy groceries with the truth. You can't pay rent with the truth. The truth is a useless commodity that will hang around your neck like an albatross -- all the way to the homeless shelter. And if you think that the million or so people in this country that are really interested in the truth about their government can support people who would tell them the truth, you got another think coming. Because the million or so people in this country that are truly interested in the truth don't have any money.

15. Do we even need to ask their opinion about justice?
Justice must be even more meaningless than truth to these people.

If you can't afford to pay for truth, then you obviously don't have enough money to buy justice.

26. Start passing out the roach spray becuse our DoJ is infested with'em
This is a political prisoner being illegally held and a Attorney General who refuses to uphold the law making sure whatever Rove and Bush and Cheney and others have done will not be investigated or prosecuted.

Fascism has already begun in this country. Be prepared for another attack on our country to keep neocons in power. This is no longer the America we knew.

The campaigns are serving as major distractions. The ten steps from the "Shock Doctrine", or "The End of America" have all happened. Why has this administration gone to such links to set it all up (almost in order) unless they intend on using it.
Courts that operate out side of our justice system (Military tribunals under the Military commissions Act
A paramilitary force with power to operate inside our borders that does not answer to the "people".
Torture, rendition, arrests without due process, loss of habeas corpus, a complicit press and a propaganda news station (fox). Spying without warrants or accountability to any court. A constant perceived enemy threat to make it acceptable to give up our freedoms for security.
Play nice with these people and they will bury you in some prison. Until the majority of them are out of our government...these neocon war profiteers...and those after 100yrs of republican rule...then be paranoid and ever watchful and extremely mistrustful of their secrecy.

from RW colleges. "Private religious colleges" which we the tax payer support. These private groups only care about power and wealth...little about morality or our democracy.

These groups who are out to destroy democracy by taking an oath of office to Bush and not the Constitution are more a danger than any "terrorist from over there".

I know Gary White. He has been a strong supporter of our public schools here, especially the fine arts programs. I knew there was a connection to the Siegelman case when White was indicted. It just smelled too strange, and the timing was really suspicious. But I did not know they tried to get him to testify against Siegelman.

My gosh, this stinks to high heaven.

31. The Bush DOJ has not been "politicised". It has been criminalized.
"Politicised" is far to innocuous a word. Under Bush, the Department of Justice has become a criminal organization. It's time to start framing it that way.

When John and Jane Doe read that a federal organization is accused of being "politicised", they yawn and turn the page. But this is a crime story, and the public needs to know it.
