Scholar: US Asked Him to Keep Tabs on Cubans in Bolivia; US Says Such Request Would Be Error

Fulbright scholar Alex Van Schaick speaks during an interview with the Associated Press in La Paz, Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. Schaick, 23, said a U.S. embassy official asked him to gather and report information about any Venezuelan and Cuban workers he could eventually meet during his work in Bolivia. The U.S. Embassy in La Paz issued a statement Friday acknowledging that incorrect information has been given to American citizens during information sessions about security and that appropriate measures were taken to assure that these errors would not be repeated.
