Call Conyers Monday and Tuesday
Congressman Conyers Is Waiting for a Push to Start Impeachment Hearings

On Thursday, Chairman John Conyers' House Judiciary Committee held a hearing at which Attorney General Michael Mukasey said that he would not investigate torture or warrantless spying, he would not enforce contempt citations, and he would treat Justice Department opinions as providing immunity for crimes.

None of this was new, but perhaps it touched something in Conyers that had not been touched before. Following the hearing, he and two staffers met for over an hour with two members of Code Pink and discussed activism and impeachment, including Congressman Robert Wexler's proposal to begin impeachment hearings on Cheney.

Conyers expressed his concerns about what might happen following an impeachment, the danger of installing a Bush replacement or losing an election. He cited potential ramifications that have not yet been examined that could have the opposite effect. Conyers told Ellen Taylor and Manijeh Saba that you need to be more than brave and courageous, you need to be smart.

Help us let Conyers know that the smart thing right now would be bravery and courage.

The Chairman told Taylor and Saba that he has been listening to several advocates for impeachment, including Liz Holtzman and David Swanson. He hinted he could be swayed by a convincing argument, leaning out of his chair for dramatic effect.

We want to continue the dialogue with Congressman Conyers. On Rosa Parks' birthday last week, Leslie Angeline began a fast for impeachment. Taylor and over 20 other activists have joined the fast <http://afterdowningstreet.org/fast >. Conyers has agreed to meet with Leslie to discuss impeachment on Tuesday.

Lend your voices to the conversation and make phone calls, send faxes and Email Congressman Conyers on Monday and Tuesday. Let the Chairman know that only impeachment hearings:

1-will reach a broad TV audience
2-will force compliance with subpoenas by eliminating "executive privilege"
3-will hold brazen criminals accountable
4-will convince citizens that Congress cares about upholding the Constitution.

12. thanks for that link cal04
and thanks for being in solidarity with my man Mike Malloy.

now please, referring to the Conyers blog:

I wonder if John is actually looking at it??? I mean, I just visited and there was little point in me adding anything...I mean, it's UNANIMOUS.

And, I really liked this signature:

'Impeachment: I don't care if they try and fail. I only care if they fail to try.'

boo-yah!

7. Thank you. I will make that call tomorrow.
These folks need to know we expect them to be representatives of the people and to uphold the laws of this country, not just politicians looking to the next election. Last I heard, the constitution is still more than "just a piece of paper."

10. Thank you -- I sent this e-mail to him
Dear Congressman Conyers:

The Bush administration is the most blatantly criminal presidential administration that our country has ever suffered through. Our Constitution has been willfully violated by George Bush and Dick Cheney countless times. If Congress fails to take action now, they are so much as saying that our Constitution is nothing but the worthless scrap of paper that George Bush has said it is.

Therefore, if Congress believes that our Constitution contains the laws that hold our country together and make us a nation of laws rather than a nation of men, then common sense demands that they impeach. So does common decency. It is not only our Constitution and our nation that is at stake. War crimes and crimes against humanity are some of the worst crimes known to man. It is a terrible crime against humanity. If the world doesn’t draw a line in the sand with regard to these kind of crimes before too long, given current weaponry, technology, and pending environmental catastrophes, it is not likely that world civilization will last much longer.

Sincerely,

This is the sort of issue that does not get due attention!

Sometimes, I think our lawmakers do not realize what is at risk!

11. Permit me to recommend a juice fast.
I just did 26 days on a juice fast in January. Code Pink has some stuff on their website about how to do a juice fast. I used a fruit & vegetable juice extractor to make up my own concoctions. I lost about 18 lb, dropped my blood pressure, and got off pain medication for an arthritic knee, among other benefits. So if you're gonna fast, this is a good way--it leaves you in great shape for carrying on with progressive causes.

14. Impeach with my $600
My husband and I are pledging whatever monies we receive from the recent government stimulus plan to go towards the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney. If impeachment does not happen we would like the money split between Nancy Pelosi's Democratic rival for Congress from California, Harry Reid's Democratic rival for Senate, John Conyer's Democratic rival for Congress and the rest to go towards bringing treason charges against Bush and Cheney after they leave office. ( treason does not have a statute of limitations.) If treason charges are not brought we want the monies to go toward a Democratic group that will hound them for eternity.

18. You just don't get it
It isn't that Representative Conyers believes that impeachment is a bad idea. He just hasn't heard from enough people urging him to do so.

22. (i don't mean to be an asshole, but how many times do we have to
call conyers for impeachment? how many emails do we have to send him? how many people need to sign robert wexler's petition? at this point i'm sick to death of conyers and his wishy-washy bullshit. if he doesn't know what the right thing is by now--he's a fool. the problem is you're telling people to "Let the Chairman know" all the great things impeachment hearings will do. but you and i both know that conyers already knows all this. it looks to me like holding his chairmanship is worth more to him than doing the right thing. caving in to pelosi for the sake of keeping his position--that is not an advocate for the people. can you tell i'm really bitter on this issue? in 2004 he was my superhero. no more.)
