Has Tim Russert "Jumped The Shark?"

OK, OK, Ok. I know. But bear with me, please.

I switched across to "Meet the Presstitutes" this morning and saw Tim and his "Panel of Illustrious Bloviators" and was seeing what I pretty much expected for what it was.

Then a face I didn't recognize filled the screen of the Electrick TeeVee Box. The face was identified as that of "David Brody, Sr. Correspondent, Christian Broadcasting Network." No, not Broder from the Post. He was sitting directly across from this snake-handler.

WTF????????? "Christian Broadcasting Network?"

Since when does anyone from CBN qualify as a "legitimate" journalist? Day-um! This is, after all, the "news" organization that does stories about fundies who pray on the berm of an interstate because they found something in Isaiah 35 about "the road of iniquity," or some such more-than-likely mis-translated drivel. This is a "news organization" that has made its bones hustling little old ladies out of their Social Security checks. This is an organization run by a man who did business with Charles Taylor in Liberia and has or had a stake in DIAMOND MINES. Somebody get me the strychnine. I need a drink!

This is the same CBN where, less than a month ago, I saw Pat Robertson, holding hands with some bleach-blond fundie-lady, declare, "And God's telling me there's a man watching who has a broken toe. I want you to know, whoever you are, that God has healed your toe." No. Really. And now, according to Tim Russert and NBC, that organization constitutes "legitimate" journalism.

Thus, I ask: has Tim Russert finally "jumped the shark?"

In 1992, shortly after being named moderator of Meet The Press, Tim Russert was having lunch with a broadcast executive. The mealtime conversation was about the pros and cons of working for General Electric’s NBC subsidiary. Russert expounded on how being employed by GE had brought him to the realization that things functioned better when Republicans were in charge.

“You know, Tim, you used to be such a rabid Democrat when you worked for Pat Moynihan,” said the executive. “But now that you’ve gotten a glimpse of who’s handing out the money in this business, you’ve become quite the Jaycee. Were you wrong about everything you used to believe so strongly?”

“I still believe,” Russert said, leaning across the table. “I believe in everything I ever did. But I also know that I never would have become moderator on Meet The Press if my employers were uncomfortable with me. And, given the amount of money at stake, millions of dollars, I don’t blame them. This is business.”

The executive agreed. “But are you concerned about losing yourself? You know, selling out?”

Russert pounded the table. “Integrity is for paupers!”
