Do "successful lemmings" always reflect good self-preservation ? Or do they reflect
a population base short on judgment and foresight and memory and long on emotion or gullibility?

I'm thinking about the lemmings who decided to jump off the cliff but there are probably other lemmings that are successful because of a populace that is gullible and emotional and doesn't exercise good judgment or foresight.

The lemmings' actions are criticized here sometimes with an argument about "mismanagement". I'm just not convinced lemmings that perform well reflect competence in the preservation of their own species. Just sayin.

(yes, this is a blatant copycat thread...in fact, I cut & pasted most of it...in an odd way, I think it answers the OP nicely, though)
