Senate votes to award telecom immunity for illegal wiretapping ordered by Bush
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 02:20 PM by seafan
This is all we need to know. The Senate just voted to award immunity to telecoms for illegal wiretapping ordered by George W. Bush.

The yes votes to the Dodd Amendment to strip immunity went down to defeat.

Thank you, Senator Obama, for your Yea vote to this amendment to this egregious bill.

Senators Clinton and Graham didn't bother to show up to vote.

Question: On the Amendment (Dodd Amdt. No. 3907 )
February 12, 2008, 11:03 AM

1. Thanks to the 31 courageous senators who voted Yea
I hope someone challenges Stabenow in her next election, although she was just re-elected in 2006, so we have a ways to go.

I'm glad to say she didn't get my vote in 2006 and won't get it in 2012. She's detestible. Lieberman, Nelson, Stabenow ... BLECCHH! :puke:

Makes me real proud of the sad state of affairs for Democrats that would like a return to the Constitution and rights to privacy.

10. Some of the Dems are serious disappointments -- Et tu Kohl? Webb? McCaskill, et al????
And so many have been talking about Webb for the VP spot with Obama. At least Boxer and Feingold (possible VP candidates) voted YES!

And I hope it isn't considered 'uncivil' to note that Obama voted the right way and HRC didn't even show up.

This vote was important. Who wants to live in a Soviet-style country where the government can secretly intercept all of your telephone calls and e-mail messages without a warrant and without a showing of probable cause? Obama apparently doesn't want us to live like that.

What possible advantage can be spun from not voting on a vital issue like this one?

No answer yet. I'm really curious as to what Clinton's strategy is here.

The way these votes are phrased, it's so muddled you can't really tell if you don't really read carefully.

And it isn't because of the of the OP, it's just the vote itself.

I know which way the wind blows...always towards the Republicans.....because of the DLC. And anyone who pulls that red state argument must think to themselves...do you honestly think that red-staters vote for a Democrat because they know they are really a Republican? They are just as clueless as to what positions the candidates take as the rest of the country....they have no idea they are getting a DINO, and when they do, they blame the Dems, not the Republicans.

And it still doesn't explain Carper and Cantwell.

30. Thanks for this list, Zodiak Ironfist. The DLC is a wasp nest. These folks need voting out ASAP.
If this election season has demonstrated anything clearly, it's that this is a pitched battle for control of the Democratic Party, between the Republican wing and the progressive wing. The DLC is looking on in horror as *their candidate* is smelling like defeat. That's why they are fighting so hard to stay in power. This is a tremendous opportunity to change the face of our party to one that is by and for The People.

There are many more of us than the DLC people. We should make it our priority to remove these people from their iron grip on our party, and replace them with true progressives. Otherwise, nothing will change.

32. You are correct on all accounts
If Hillary does not win the nomination, it will shatter the notion of the DLC being the "electable" wing of the party, which I think is a load of crap not proven beyond one man...Bill Clinton.

But the problem is this...do you think with the history of scuttling Democratic efforts over and over again that the DLC would push for Obama after he defeats Hillary? After Carville betrayed Kerry? After Gore lost support because he went "populist"? I submit that they will not. They would rather the Democratic party lose and be a minority again than hand mantle of the party back to the People. Besides....they win anyways because under the Republicans, their corporate masters still reign supreme...and in the minority position they can continue to make sure there is no effective opposition.

Case in point: Joe Leiberman....DLCers and DLC-connected Democrats let Lamont wither on the vine to make sure Joe Leiberman got his spot back, only to vote consistently with the Republicans. If you are a mole organization, that is exactly the thing to do.

I will never vote for a DLCer....never. I will take just about any other Democrat, but never a DLCer. They do not fool me with their glamour and myth about a "conservative America".

To them, bipartisanship means give the Republicans everything they want without negotiation or compromise. Oh...and make sure that progressives never have a spot at the table by taking up their seats.

I declare war on them.

34. Jesus. Have Senate Dems abondoned all reason?
What was the purpose of granting immunity to telecoms? How was it sold to them?

For "protecting" telecoms from prosecution because a trial MIGHT reveal sensitive information?

There are ALREADY provisions in the law that allow for such a scenario.

How could they NOT see that this is strictly an ass-covering move by Bush?

More importantly, WHY did they CAVE? AGAIN?

What is this OBSESSION they have with giving Der Chimpenfuehrer EVERYTHING he wants????
