Too many Democrats simply don't have the values we imagine they do, and it lets them off the hook |

Selling Out---The Democrats have conspired to give Bush everything he wants. We're going to get screwed. Nobody should pretend to be a hero here.Jane: http://firedoglake.com/2008/02/12/fisa-fiasco-live-on-cspan2/I have to say that what constantly amazes me is just how damn little it costs corporate America to buy our elected officials. Pennies on the dollar, really, for what they get. While one can't discount legalized bribery campaign dollars entirely, I do think too often we assume they're the reason lawmakers do the "wrong thing" when the simpler explanation that they believe the wrong thing is in fact the right thing is the answer. Too many Democrats simply don't have the values we imagine they do, and it lets them off the hook too much to assume they're simply craven people who need to get re-elected instead of bad people who don't share our values.http://atrios.blogspot.com/2008_02_10_archive.html#3472928617036355183

2. Change Minds, Change Votes |
|
That's why we need Obama. He's the only one who is willing to go into the red states and talk to people in their own language so we can start changing minds in order to change votes.

3. IOTW "I'M the only REAL kind of Democrat!!" |
|
I'm sure there are bad Democrats out there, but we can't fall into the no true Scotsman fallacy. Nor can we marginalize the party by assuming that only those with a narrowly, and most often unofficially, defined set of beliefs are "allowed". I've been accused of not being a real Democrat more than once and most often it's over guns for one example. The irony that the official party platform agrees with me not those who say I'm not a real Democrat never seems to strike home.

We all knew what would happen if we invaded Iraq; all of the evidence and all of the experts told them it would be an unmitigated disaster, but they voted for it anyway. Ditto for the Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, tax cuts for the rich, no-bid contracts, faith-based initiatives, FISA, anything and everything that Bush has pulled out of his ass for the last seven years, and they've gone along with it.
If by "values", you mean "wouldn't sell their grandmother for a buck", then yes, apparently some "Democrats" have different "values" from the rest of us.
