Country's 1st Baby Boomer Receives 1st Social Security Payment

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The nation's first baby boomer received her first Social Security retirement benefit Tuesday, marking another milestone for the post-World War II generation.

Kathleen Casey-Kirschling, 62, was born one second after midnight on Jan. 1, 1946. The retired teacher who lives in Earleville, Md., and Vero Beach applied for her benefits online, and received her payment by direct deposit.

Federal officials at a Vero Beach event to debut a public service announcement lauded Casey-Kirschling's decision to receive her benefits by direct deposit. A video featuring Casey-Kirschling was scheduled to appear on the Social Security Web site later Tuesday.

"Kathy is a trendsetter for her generation," said Jim Courtney, Social Security's deputy commissioner for communications.

8. Hey, I've paid my dues. You better figure out how you're going to support me.
Lift the cap on income taxed for FICA and there won't be any problem paying for Social Security.

Now Medicare, THAT is a different matter altogether, and I don't know how that will be paid for.

10. I'm all for lifting the cap...
and for what it's worth, I wouldn't suggest for a second that people retiring now shouldn't get everything out of SS that they deserve after years of plugging away nickels and dimes into SS on their way through the rat race. They've more than earned it. :hi:

You young whippersnappers don't know a real story when it bites you in the pocketbook.

(born in August of '63) and I don't expect to get diddly squat from Social Security.

15. Why not! It's your right, and the money is there.
The Trust Fund is as solid as the US Government -- and if that solidity wanes, if the feds default on federal bonds, Social Security will be the least of your worries. Future underfunding can be easily overcome by taxing incomes above the current limit of $97,500. And if there's not enough in the Trust Fund, there will still be something -- and much political pressure to fully fund the benefits.

So, if you're going to worry about benefits due you when you're old, worry about Medicare -- that's where the funding problems will be.

11. As a 1953 Boomer, I'm SURE the well will be dry before I see a penny...
Same thing happened to jobs in the 70s....late Boomers found the early Boomers were there first.

12. How can that be?
I have personally been told by two Obama supporters that the boomers have already completely bankrupt the country with their medicare and social security pay outs.

I am serious.

When I asked both of them how old the boomers are now they had no idea. They just knew they had ruined the country.

When I explained to them that no boomer had drawn on either of those programs they basically called me a liar. Whatever...

16. I'm an Obama supporter here to tell you that Social Security will be there in perpetuity.
As I tell my gerontology students, the elderly will get their checks until global warming kills us all.

The problems will come in Medicare -- not only will demand increase, but costs will increase faster until medical inflation is brought under control again. If that is the concern, then get to work on single-payer health reform.
