my nephew has joined the Army
To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. That his parents could be so shortsighted and foolish is maddening. The Army is "promising" not to send him overseas and they believed them. He just got married last July, he's hit a rough patch in his marriage and the new wife is putting pressure on him to buy a house. I just hope that he survives the next 5 years.

3. I have a nephew in the Army also.
Going back over there soon too. He's been home on leave. Best wishes for your family and him.

Apparently the "bonus" is $40,000, half after basic and training and the other half upon completion of his 5 year hitch. I think those are pretty long odds with what I see and read everyday.

6. and a kick in the ass too
when they got married last year I overheard her bragging that "AJ is going to give me everything I want or else". Sorry to say this but it's too bad she can't go too.

Oh, but she CAN go, too! Why don't you put that little bug in her ear.

7. Well, he could do worse than Fort Benning in February for basic training.
... but not much.

As a Viet Nam veteran, I'd not be inclined to advise anyone to enlist ... but I'm among the last to condemn them for it.

8. I agree
I have nothing against serving in the military but I have a problem when the military makes a promise they know they aren't going to keep. Knowing the kid the way I do I just know what he's going to endure and what he expects are 2 different things.

10. Yikes, your nephew's wife sounds like a major bitch!
I'm sorry for your family. As you are probably well aware, his marital problems have only just begun with this move....

Chances are he's going to come home disabled (PTSD or worse) in some form and that's really going to fuck up the marriage, besides the strain of long, multiple deployments and the stress that causes. His parents are also going to truly suffer in the long haul WHEN his marriage breaks up and intensifies whatever conditions he comes home with.

Jeez, hugs all around.

11. The Bible forbids going to war during your first year of marriage.
I forget where it says that, exactly.

13. BINGO! Deuteronomy 24:5
Deuteronomy 24:5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
