Guantanamo Comes to Main Street U.S.A.

By Mark A. Goldman

12/02/08 "ICH" -- -- They say that the difference between how democracy in Europe has evolved compared to that of the United States is that in Europe the government is afraid of the People whereas in the United States the People are afraid of the government. That's a dangerous state of affairs and it looks like it's going to get worse.

It's not only a matter of who you vote for... it's a matter of how well informed you are when you do vote... and Americans now are notorious for not being nearly as well informed as the citizens of many other countries are. So in America, we don't really think that deeply about the range of choices that are or are not available to us. Fatal mistake.

The video below is indicative of the evolving consciousness of law enforcement in our nation...

_____________________________________________________________________

Watching that video of huge men, and more than competent women holding that woman down, twisting her arms - watching them yank her pants down(panties included) - and after she was totally naked, REMOVING the bedding from the bed that they had bent her over on to strip her . .

I hardly believe that this can be real!

I mean, why would they even videotape this, and even let it get to be news?

Sick sick sick

Makes me sick

Tell me it's not real?

I had to check, it's real .. . Google found this related story:

Woman traumatized after strip search

/snip/

Steffey says Stark County, Ohio sheriff's deputies used excessive force and assaulted her during a strip search 15 months ago, according to a federal lawsuit.

Stark County Sheriff Timothy Swanson denies the allegation.

Steffey's attorney says her clothes, including her underwear and bra, were stripped from her body by at least seven male and female sheriff's deputies and jail workers.

She lay face down in handcuffs at the time.

Gets worse in the video

sick.

3. I don't claim to know the true/whole story behind this video.
Further, I have no desire to defend LEOs. However, I remember the Duke Lacrosse team incident and how many people made fools of themselves.

If I understand this story correctly, law enforcement officers claim that this woman was in a physical confrontation with another woman causing police to be summoned. She was severely intoxicated and out of control. She refused to calm down, and was subsequently arrested. While being detained she allegedly uttered something about suicide. I have no way to know if the suicide comment is true or not, but the police claim that once uttered they have a responsibility to remove any object that could be used for suicide, which includes all clothing and bedding. The police claim that a cavity search (at least with male officers present) wasn't done.

I agree that the video looks bad, but my understanding is that the video was taken by police to show how out of control the woman was, and was only released because of her lawsuit. If the police thought that the video made them look bad, it would have never seen the light of day.

Blast me it you want, but I'm going to bed. If the LEOs were wrong, I have no problem with them being the ones going to jail (in fact I'd grin.) But, I'm just not sure that this is the case that I'd use to prove police corruption.

Regards, Mugu

4. I never heard the police trying to calm her down in the video.

.

In the audio all I heard was the woman sobbing and asking "what are you doing?" - and some mild cries of despair.

If they were REALLY trying to calm her down

some dialog from the officers would be in order, no?
