George Bush is "Not a Lincoln, But a Fraud"
Hints of illusions of grandeur?

Not a Lincoln, But a Fraud
Scott Horton - February 12, 2008 - http://www.harpers.org/archive/2008/02/hbc-90002376

As Bush runs down to his last months as the nation’s chief executive, and his popularity continues to sink into hitherto unheard-of depths, his retainers remain concerned about the “Bush Legacy.” Efforts are underway on several fronts to attempt to burnish his record. And one figure regularly trotted out to help prop up the Great Leader is the nation’s greatest president, Abraham Lincoln. Two examples of this effort came in an extended exclusive interview that Bush granted to Fox News’s Bret Baier, for a documentary entitled “George W. Bush: Fighting to the Finish.” In the course of the interview, Bush repeatedly compared himself to Abraham Lincoln. Here’s how Baier previews it:

We talked a lot about President Lincoln. And there’s going to be a lot of people out there who watch this hour and say, is he trying to equate himself with Lincoln? I tell you what — he thinks about Lincoln and the tough times that he had during the Civil War. 600,000 dead. The country essentially hated him when he was leaving office. And the President reflects on that. This is a President who is really reflecting on his place in history.

Baier’s mastery of history is vintage Fox. In fact, Lincoln had just won re-election by a commanding majority and was emerging as an iconic political figure at the time .....

5. he's not even the Lincoln Tunnel, or a Lincoln Log--at least those have a logical function
and didn't lie us into a war. Neither did LAbe Lincoln.

The brazen arrogance--words fail.

6. "Efforts are underway on several fronts to attempt to burnish his record."
This concerns me. As far as I'm concerned he is our worst president, ever, and it is necessary that this fact is properly borne out in his legacy.

I am concerned because I see some success on this front efforts to burnish Reagan's record. Reagan is currently afforded too much credit for the end of the Soviet Union and isn't properly recognized for his negative impacts on the economy and the middle class.

shows as far as we can. Bush's popularity is in the toilet, and people are seeing him for what he really is these days. Anyone who wants to hug him at this point will only sink with him.

I sent a short clip of that "Fighting to the Finish" thing to my mostly apolitical mom, and her only response was something about Fox News being Bush's PR agency. That's the message that gets through; not the one the creators intended. Bush is going away soon, but he could be used to discredit a lot of his boosters on his way out-- before they get the chance to revise history.

17. It is interesting to see the stats on number of views for YouTubes, and the RECs
Wexler at the DoJ/Mukasey oversight hearing had 12,000 views the first 2 days!

This is "voting" too, and it shows where people's opinions are at when an R
puts up a YouTube of Rs at the same hearing, and it is accessed only 28 times!

REC up your fav YouTubes, everyone!

16. Someone has prompted Dubya to make such references ... and it's chilling.
On MANY occasions in the last couple of years, I've postulated that the GOP would rather have a martyr than a loose cannon ... that the prospect of a melt-down "ex-pResident" has got to be something the GOP looks at with foreboding. The political "convenience" of a martyred pResident just HAS TO BE tantalizing to the fascist right. I just wouldn't put it past his "base" to arrange an assassination. Chilling ... but far too plausible.
