The BIG lie
"If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything."

It seems the things I DID stand for caused me to "fall."

I stood for the Democratic Party because they claimed to stand for change in the DC. Boy was I a sucker on that one.

I stood for justice and it no longer seems to exist, as America focuses on a few incidents of water-boarding in Cuba, while ignoring massive incidents of torture at Abu Graib.

I stood for the US Constitution, which currently lies in tatters, thanks to the Bush regime. With the exception of Feingold, no one in congress seems to care if we ever restore the 4th Amendment.

I stood for peace in Iraq and all we got was empty promises from a bunch of liars who just wanted to win their elections to offices in DC.

Maybe, I should take a stand defending crooks and liars, since our representatives seem to read everything I write on-line and go in the opposite direction.

1. Nihilism eh? I sympathize
Certainly most people everywhere are assholes - and why should assholes get good government? Why should assholes get the US Constitution? I mean aren't we getting the Democratic party we basically deserve?

2. I sympathize with your frustration, but...
I have to believe that Democratic control of the executive branch, plus broader control of the legislative, will do a lot to help these issues in 2009.

I've got to believe that, because if I don't ... well, then there really is nothing left to believe in.

4. That about sums it up, doesn't it?
If I didn't believe the Dems are our last hope, there's nothing left to believe in. I'm horrified at the black and dismal future my grandchildren are in for, but somehow I have to cling to the hope things might change for the better. Otherwise...well, words fail me.

8. That's one of the more depressing thoughts I've heard in quite a while....
The idea of depending on the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Hoyer, Emanuel, Feinstein, Clinton et al to improve the lot of average Americans is so awful that it makes me want to spend the rest of the decade with my head under the covers and a cyanide capsule at the ready.

I just have to wonder how it's come to this; how the quality of people who aspire to political leadership has deteriorated to the point that intelligent, creative, reasonable people are automatically weeded out, while the system self-selects for the most corrupt, rudderless, inept, cowardly fools we can find -- and then we lie to ourselves repeatedly until we're almost convinced that one of them is worthy of our vote.

We know from experience that they're dedicated solely to their own career advancement. They start positioning themselves -- as soon as the final word of their oath of office fades into the ether -- to collect that pot of gold that awaits them in a decade or so on the other side of the government/corporate revolving door.

I suppose the few exceptions -- Kucinich, Woolsey, Stark, Wexler, members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Boxer, Feingold and maybe a dozen or so more -- give us hope that things can actually change and the voices of the people can someday drown out the sound of corporate bribes filling all those pockets.

But nihilism is a lot easier on the psyche. You're not constantly crushed at the daily betrayals, and you're even pleasantly surprised every now and then when they forget who they actually work for and do the right thing.

Will things improve once Bush/Cheney are gone (assuming they consent to leave on schedule)? Undoubtedly. How could the departure of the rottenest bastard of the 21st century and his mindless marionette fail to automatically make things better? Better yet, if they're actually indicted, tried, convicted and sentenced to serious time, the largest and loudest party in world history would spontaneously break out on six continents and last indefinitely.

However, I'll keep the noise makers and the dunce hats in the garage for the time being. Nihilism allows me to remain sane and calm while expecting the worst -- and usually getting it.

Now leave me alone before I do something drastic, like drink too much cheap beer and suffer the consequences. :puke:

7. As citizens, we're not supposed to trust politics or politicians.
Too often we confuse politics and the antics of politicians with solutions. They can be, but usually aren't, vehicles to attain an end. Too often, far too often, they are the barriers to solutions.

We vote and think our responsibility ends there.

As for me, I'd rather do something useful for humanity than trust politicians to be anything, or do anything, other that be and do what politicians do.

9. Bob Kerry, the former Democratic senator said,
"I don't want to tell you something that's going to make you not like me. If I had a choice between getting a round of applause by delivering a twenty-six-second applause line and getting a round of boos by telling the truth, I'd rather get the round of applause."
