Archbishop takes centre stage (Speaks mind, gets condemned)
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 01:55 PM by icymist
Few Archbishops of Canterbury can have made such an impact on the public as Rowan Williams.

Dr Williams has rarely been out of the news since his enthronement ceremony as the 104th Archbishop in February 2003.

He has not flinched from entering public debate, most notably on the question of whether there should be a war in Iraq.

His formidable intellect has been combined with a personal warmth and a populist touch – he has described himself a “hairy leftie” in the past, and a fan of The Simpsons cartoon series.

Such is his fame that he can boast of being impersonated on the Channel 4 Bremner, Bird and Fortune satire show and even having a teddy bear launched to coincide with his enthronement.

Dr Williams drew widespread publicity from the day Downing Street announced his appointment over an attack he had made on corruption and premature sexualisation of children.

4. later on in the interview...
<snip>
In an interview with the Muslim magazine Emel, he praised the Muslim ritual of praying five times a day and launched a stinging attack on America, comparing it unfavourably to the British Empire at its peak
