She Needs You. Please.
She was only 14 years old when she was an eighth grader, a cheerleader, a young, vibrant girl with her whole life ahead of her. She was only 14 years old, when she enjoyed her last year of life as a normal, healthy girl.

She was only 15 years old, when she started chemotherapy for Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer that attacks the bones. She lost her hair, had the cancerous bone in her pelvis removed, and then her lungs started to deteriorate.

She lived through her 16th year with an oxygen bottle her closest companion, as her lung function approached a mere 20% of normal capacity.

In May of 2007, she was only 17 years old, when she finally had a double lung transplant, to replace lungs killed by interstices lung disease, brought on by the chemotherapy which saved her from the bone cancer.

When her health insurance is canceled later this year, it will be canceled with the simple explanation that she has reached her "lifetime maximum benefits."

And she has just turned 18...

Her name is Brittani. She is my niece. And she needs your help.

The financial burden, as you can imagine, is tremendous, even with insurance. Consequently, our ability to care for Brittani is on the verge of being compromised. If we don't get some help, well, I don't know what will happen, I just know it won't be good.

We understand it is campaign season, and there are politicians who need your money, if they are to help our country. We don't want to take away from that - but we need your help, too.

Please. Help us help Brittani.

DONATE TO BRITTANI HERE

Anything you can give will help this brave young woman, and our family, deal with the ongoing expenses for her care. If you'd like to visit Brittani's Caring Bridge web page, please feel free to sign her guest book. You can't donate to Brittani on that site - but there is a link below for donations.

DONATE TO BRITTANI HERE

Thank you, all.

UPDATE- I've been asked what kind of costs we face for Brittani. Among more mundane costs like transportation and lodging for her frequent hospital stays, her insurance doesn't cover things like immuno-suppressant drugs (necessary so her body won't reject her lungs), lung biopsies and labs (she frequently requires tissue checks on the lungs), doctor's fees and copays not covered by her insurance (while it remains), and dozens of other things, both big and small, that pile up as a result of her ongoing, lifetime treatment. And because we must suppress her immune system, a simple cold, can kill her, so we must take measure to protect her from even simple illnesses and injuries.

Here's the other thing: Transplanted lungs only last, at best, around 10 years. So for the rest of her life, Brittani will be in need of new lungs - unless stem cell research is cut loose, and she is able to grow a new set of her own. But until then, she looks forward to a lifetime of failing lungs in need of replacement. This is one reason her reaching of "maximum lifetime benefits" is so cruel.

So if you can, please. DONATE TO BRITTANI HERE

1. That is heart wrenching
My mother was a heart transplant patient and I know what a trial it is to keep up with the medicines and all the rest. My mom got some medicine through one of the PDAP. Of course, if you have prescription coverage then they won't help. Is she on disability? Then she would have Medicare and maybe Medicaid. My mom lived 13 years with her new heart and had another heart attack, she didn't die from transplant related problems at all. Hang in there.

3. God Bless your niece and your family
One thing I can suggest about drugs:

Get Her doctor(s) office to ask the drug company if she can get on their low cost program. That means they will sell the drugs to you cheaper because of lower family income. You have to fill out forms and all kinds of qualifiers, yada, yada, yada. The pharma companies have these programs; they don't like to advertise it. So do ask if she qualifies. If no body in the office knows, tell them to ask the drug rep when she/he comes next. This is where a drug rep can actually be useful. I know about this because I used to work in a Cancer Center.

almost all the "double lungers" are under 18...and,yes,unlike heart transplants, which may last 25 years, lung transplants are shorter, and the anti-rejection meds are tripled.I'm sending a donation and a prayer for your neice.I hope things go well.

... and I know how hard it is to go through. She was just 19 when we lost her to this horrible disease. I miss her every day - she was a bright light to many. (Her blog www.snarkypants.com/!/ is still up and she posted up until 4 days before she left us almost two years ago.)

I send your family love and peace and I will donate gladly in Lauren's name.

23. I must agree
Losing the insurance is bad - and it only gets worse, from there, without true healthCARE, or looking farther down the road a bit, stem cell research, either of which would do wonders for Brittani, and thousands upon thousands of our fellow Americans...anyway, thank you so much for your kindness, understanding, and help.

27. Health Care
As the father of a 6 year old boy who went through a years worth of treatment for Non-Hodgkins lymphoma I truly feel your pain. Tyler is currently cancer free and this month he will have his one year PET/CAT scan to check for any new tumors. I was laid off last June and currently I have insurance through COBRA. My current employer does not have a health plan and as of January 1,2009 Tyler will not have any insurance unless I am able to get a group plan through my current employer or thru a new employer. I will have to try and get him in thru the state medicaid.medicare program but we may not be eligible because of our income. We are not eligible for Scripps because of our income which is barely over the ceiling. I hope and pray every day that Tyler stays cancer free and that either my wife and I can find some sort of group plan to cover us all.

As I have gone through this journey I have been amazed by the strengh and determination that these children with cancer have. They are determined to live as normal a life as possible and they are determined to beat the disease. The strongest and toughest person I have met in my life is my son.

It is so important that we ask both Hillary and Barak to cleary define their positions on Universal Health Care so that our children will not have to go through these kinds of traumas. Health Care should be treated as a National Security Issue not a for profit issue. A healty country is a strong country.

I wish your daughter nothing but the best and I hope that we get a adminstration that will address both health care and the stem cell issue.

29. Children are simply amazing
I have seen more bravery, courage, and stoicism from Brittani than I thought was possible, given the pain, fear, and trauma of her treatment and illness. She makes me so proud. She never quails at the thought of more needles, surgeries, or pain, and is so resolute in it all. Amazing.

I am sorry to hear of your son's illness - my family wishes you all the very best. I know that we are going to have a terrific struggle to replace Brittani's insurance - I hope you do not suffer the same for Tyler. I read an article the other day about how insurance companies drop people with major medical problems after they take premiums for a few months or even years, until the insured person actually needs treatment. Then they get dropped, and fast, in what the industry terms, "rescission." here's the article, in case you are interested: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-bluecross12feb12,0,4319662.story

Anyway - all my hopes for Tyler - please give him our best. And thank you.

32. Does She Qualify For Medicaid
Once she turns 18 and is considered an adult, would she qualify for medicaid?

This is not to say we shouldn't help, as that would still leave several unpaid bills, but I am truly curious.

I have heard of people like yourself accepting donations via Paypal and Paypal locking/freezing the funds due to unusual 'high activity'. I've heard stories that people had lots of trouble getting their money out, if ever. This happenened to someone raising donations for Katrina and someone raising money for a Ron Paul recount to name two that I know of.

Just be careful.

37. Hold a press conference and invite all the media.
Your local newspaper editor should know if there's a press club or other source that lists all media in your area -- TV, radio, and print. Also contact national media outlets - Keith Olbermann at MSNBC and anyone else who will listen. See if you can find a PR professional or publicist who will donate their time to help you on this.

Good luck - I am working on a Congressional campaign for Vickie Butcher, www.votevickiebutcher.com, a strong advocate for healthcare reform to provide universal healthcare for all Americans, most especially our children. She was March of Dimes Mother of the Year and has been active in healthcare reform for years. I will suggest that Vickie use Brittani's example in her speeches to show why we have got to get meaningful healthcare reform now -- it's not just the uninsured facing catastrophic consequences - it's people who believe they had good insurance--until they or their children get sick.

And MapleLeaf - you don't understand it because you have health care in your country, unlike the US where we have health insurance executives care - where we care for executives. Kids though - not so much.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4585763

the country needs to know what these fucking insurance companies pull on people
once you get the word from the insurance company you should contact the local media--brittani's story is a story i think they would be happy to cover.

on a personal level--how terrible for this young girl--the ongoing hardship is terrible--even if you knew everything would be paid for and taken care of--she still has to go through this. i'm very sorry.

when people donate through caringbridge does caringbridge take a cut of the donation? (i don't like paypal)
