1. You go to a site like PhotoBucket and add your picture
Then put the link they provide into the body of your message.

2. Right
Of course, if the picture is already on the internet, all you have to do is add the existing link to your post.

10. No, that is stealing band width from the originating site.
http://www.tipz.net/Bandwidth.htm

It's common among amateurs and beginners to link to images and other files directly to some other server instead of putting them on their local server. Sometimes they just don't know better, sometimes they are just lazy, and sometimes they've just run out of space at their free host.

So not only do they "steal" the image (it is probably copyrighted and they are copying it without permission each time the web site is loaded) they "steal" the bandwidth!!

This is extraordinarily bad form, it's tasteless and it should be avoided like the plague.

In some extreme cases, unscrupulous "webmasters" (I use the term loosely) link to large zip files on other servers to give their own visitors extra features. This often occurs with sites containing downloadable software, wallpaper and desktop themes.

DO NOT do this without permission! If you do, you are a thief and you are costing someone else money and aggravation.

21. I wasn't aware of that
It isn't something I do often, and I'll stop all together. Thanks.

4. Try this
Right click on the picture and select "copy image location" and then past that here (if you are using firefox as a browser).

5. If you do this also do this
This works for most pictures.

Say you have a picture you want to use in a posting;

http: //foobar.com/JulieNewmar.jpg

Now, if you just link it to your LJ posting, you immediately
start stealing bandwidth from foobar.com.

This is simply not a nice thing to do as some websites pay
for every byte they transfer.

If you change that URL a little;

http: //foobar.com.nyud.net:8090/JulieNewmar.jpg

It then uses a free public caching service. It gets fetched
ONCE from foobar.com, and they are not made bankrupt as each
of LJ's horny guys look at your Catwoman picture.

It helps to preview the posting before you hit post as this
gets the caching service to do the initial fetch of the
picture, which can be slow, before your posting appears to
the public. Sometimes you need to wait a few minutes and
re-preview it before everything will appear as it should, and
some web servers will not play ball with the cache, and this
is how you weed those out.

9. Yeah, that's what I do with other site's content.
It works great and you don't annoy anyone. Once you figure out the syntax for the link you want. The other thing you can do is upload to your own web storage, if you have any, and link to that.

7. Drag & Drop
You have to remove the text that says "This image cannot be displayed...yadda yadda", but try it.

8. I see people mentioned just pasting the url to an existing pic
works fine. I'd just like to warn people to make sure the site you are borrowing the bandwidth from is not some poor dudes personal site. Many places charge for bandwidth and DU has tons of traffic, linking to a persons private site could end up costing them money.
