Edwards would accept VP or AG posts but may opt to become the Gore of poverty
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 10:09 PM by jackson_dem
Let's keep this to Edwards. We don't want to mention the other candidates because that would force the thread to be locked and go to the primaries forum.

-snip-

His decision could come down to what he envisions as his role in a Democratic administration. The only Cabinet job he seems interested in is the post of attorney general. While he has said he has no interest in a second run for vice president, one former aide said he certainly wouldn't turn down such an offer, in part because such a path seems to be his only realistic shot of ever becoming president.

But Edwards has told several associates that he envisions himself outside of government, working on poverty in a manner similar to the way Gore has taken on environmental challenges as a personal cause.

As one former aide pointed out, Gore didn't need to make endorsements or accept another government post to make his transition.

Link removed because it mentions a candidate. If you want proof of this send me a message and I will give you a link.

1. A true Democrat would step out of the race, endorse and get on with life...but not JE.
I think both Billary and Obama have told him to take a leap at the extortion. And one reason he sees himself outside is because neither want him after he disgraced himself this way.

2. So no Democrat who ran and lost this year is a "true Democrat"?
Dodd, Biden, Richardson, and Kucinich have not endorsed anyone. Nor has, for that matter, Romney and Thompson on the rethug side. Giuliani is the only significant candidate who has endorsed someone after losing.

In 2004 Clark and Dean didn't endorse anyone after losing either.

3. I would except the link your provided talks about him endorsing Hillary
which is just a subtle way to get it posted in GD instead of the primary section where it belongs

If you hadn't put that link in, then I would not have had a problem

8. What would be the point of that?
There have been about half a dozen threads about it already there. I posted this because this is news. This is the first indication Edwards would consider being VP and the first real inkling that he would consider being AG. Before this there was a lot of speculation about AG but none of it came from the Edwards camp. It was also assumed that he would not accept being VP again until this. This is news about someone who is no longer a candidate.

5. I was for Edwards, but even IF he endorses HRC I will NOT vote for her. I voted Obama
in the primary and will support him in the general.

6. I like Edwards, but I don't see him as the choice for either Obama or Clinton
I see Clinton picking a Bill Richardson or Obama himself.

I see Obama picking somebody like a Wes Clark - experienced in foreign affairs and has the military background to counter George W. McCain.

7. I could hook him up with some quite affordable office space in New Orleans
not to mention a talented and, at present, fairly seriously undepaid policy analyst. :-)

10. He should work on the poverty issue -- it's something NEITHER of the
other showponies really said anything about initially. And they only did so because John made it an issue.

Hell, the way things stand now, the only way the poor are going to get any attention after the election is by John Edwards keeping the message going. He gave them a voice, and forced the others into acknowledging their problems.

12. Exactly. I've been saying here (and HOPING) that's what he'd do - and truely...
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 11:07 PM by Triana
..if he wants to DO something - really GET SOMETHING DONE about the issue of poverty then he will HAVE to do it outside of the US political arena - because that arena is OWNED lock, stock, and barrel, top-to-bottom by corporations - and honey, we ain't gettin NOTHIN done with them in the way. I just ain't gonna happen. Progress is not possible where corprats-as-humans are usurping the human rights and drowning out the collective voices of REAL humans in this country and in this nations' government.

SAME with the issue of climate change. Gore had to get OUT of politics to get real awareness and progress on that issue.

I think Edwards should stay above the political fray - endorse NO ONE (but still garner promises from and put pressure on the candidates/nominees/president on the issue of poverty) and that he should work on the cause of his life (and a MAJOR issue in all our lives) OUTSIDE of Washington and outside of politics.

THEN he will be able to get some real progress on the issue - without being derailed by the Washington plutocratic sewer of influence, oppression, and obstruction.

THERE IS NO PLACE in American Politics for REAL visionaries like Al Gore and John Edwards. It's sad but true. The corporate-controlled political system we have (which exists ONLY to serve itself instead of the citizens of this country) spits them out like so many pariahs. That's what happened to Edwards in this election year.

They have to do the most important work of our time outside of that self-serving system. And really, it's better for them and their (OUR) causes that they do.

THOSE PEOPLE - THOSE VISIONARIES - the Al Gore and John Edwards types - are doing the REAL WORK for us in this country and in this world - NOT the Washington politicians and lobbyists who sit up there and suck up our tax dollars under the ruse of "representing" us when they really only represent themselves.

That system is broken and has been for a long time.

If we want REAL PROGRESS on anything - we (and they - Gore and Edwards et al) have to usurp that system - go around it, outside of it - OR we have to change it. And changing it isn't going to happen right now - because frankly, people in this country don't want that change bad enough to fight for it - yet. Maybe they never will.

And climate change and poverty remain an afterthought to too many people still -- UNTIL it affects THEM. THEN they'll wish something had changed.

13. Please do not put Gore and johnnyboy in the same sentence
Al Gore is a true statesman. He doesn't just talk the talk, he walks it. He has proved over and over again his love and concern for our planet and its inhabitants.

johnnyboy just wants to be president. Now that that is not going to happen, watch him drop the poverty issue just as fast as he picked it up.

14. I disagree...
...I think both men are visionaries with bigger agendas than just serving themselves. And I'm sorry you don't like it but I will put the two in the same sentence if I so choose.

15. The only vision johnnyboy has ever had
was seeing his butt in the Oval Office.

He did nothing when he had the chance in the senate. Well except voting FOR the IWR.
