Turley: Dem leadership blocking torture investigat'n to avoid triggering impeachment investigat'n
....and the damaging disclosure of Democratic knowledge of the torture program.

According to this Constitutional scholar, it's not just idle conspiracy theory any more.

Campaign Starts to Push John Conyers to Begin Impeachment Proceedings — Against the Wishes of Nancy Pelosi

By Jonathan Turley
February 12, 2008

It has been well-known that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has insisted that there will be no impeachment of President Bush during her term. Activists, however, have reported that John Conyers may be considering confronting Pelosi and starting such proceedings after a meeting in his office. They have started a campaign to show Conyers that he will have the support of the Democratic base, even if he lacks the support of Democratic leadership.

The meeting and campaign is detailed here.

This follows Mukasey’s bizarre rationalization of why he will not allow a criminal investigation into the Bush torture program. Click here

The Democratic leadership has been helping the White House behind the scenes to block any serious investigation of torture to avoid triggering an impeachment investigation and the disclosure of Democratic knowledge of the torture program. Conyers, however, is the wild card. Any impeachment move would be a direct confrontation with Pelosi. He would be lionized by Democratic activists, who have grown unhappy with Pelosi. Indeed, it may be difficult for Pelosi to survive such a public fight and to secure the votes needed next Congress to be renewed as Speaker. It is worth watching.

Ms. Pelosi should be stripped of the Speakership.

Her tenure over this past year is the epitome of failure to preserve, protect and defend the United States Constitution. It is time she is replaced.

Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 09:44 PM by SpiralHawk
She should step down as Speaker for the sake of the American people, and let a real leader take over.

She has lost my confidence, and apparently the confidence of millions of other honest Americans who care about the rule of law, rather than the rule of corporate fat cats. Shame on her for all her enabling of Commander AWOL & his treasonous cronies...

7. Pelosi and Reid are part of the problem, not the solution - they must go!
They are simply enablers of the corrupt status quo, and have been nothing but an utter disappointment to those who elected them in hope of something better.

A big time AMEN!

Democrats had every opportunity to kill off the right wing Reaganomics revolution after Iran-Contragate but stupidly chose not to do so. We had many years of Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II as a consequence.

The Dems simply cannot afford to keep treating the Republicans with kid gloves. The Dems MUST stop Bush, NOW!

11. One theory I have heard- Congress is reluctant to impeach or
bring this corrupt administration to justice is because in the eyes of the world this would be an embarrasment and a confirmation that the US form of democracy is faulty and further the realization that the US has become a failed nation. Pride goeth before the fall? Denial?

15. That theory doesn't fly
It is actually the reverse. If they did their job, if they upheld their oaths and held the impeachment hearings that the constitution provides for they would show the world that we are a nation of laws and that our democratic republic may have stumbled, but it hasn't failed. Impeachment would show the world that we do respect all laws, including international laws, and that we don't condone our leaders running a muck in the name of nationalism disguised as patriotism.

Trust me, it's not in the air or the water here in DC. It's a conscious decision the Dem leadership has made to live in delusion, complacency and complicity.

(as they fear, FAILING to impeach) they indefinitely postpone the knowledge of their incompetence from reaching the public, rather than confirm it right away.

Thank you Mr. Mukasey for not stalling with the facts, and providing Congress what was needed to grab the ball and take over.
