Ukraine will refuse NATO bases

Ukraine has said it is ready to adopt laws to prevent NATO military bases from being deployed on its territory, in the event of the country joining the military alliance.

Ukraine's president, Viktor Yushchenko, has said in Moscow that Russia need not worry about NATO military bases on Ukraine soil.

In mid-January, President Yushchenko, sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, expressing hope that the country could join an action plan for NATO membership.

Yushchenko also said that his country would eventually hold a referendum on the issue of the former Soviet republic's NATO membership.

I think they have seen how well we are doing in the ME and they don't want to inflame relations with Russians. Just because your a member of NATO doesn't mean you have station foriegn troops in your country.
