1. The state is finally as old as the average age of its residents. Woohoo!!

Yes, I know, there are many younger people living in Arizona.

Congratulations, Arizona!

6. A man DIED there on the Devil's Staircase a few minutes after I lugged my backpack up the switchback
It was a beautiful, temperate October day in 2000. As I was hiking into Indian Garden campground, the rangers all came running out of there with first aid kits in hand.

In time, the helicopter flew in and landed at the closest landing spot. The bird was there a long time. There was time because they had nobody to fly to the hospital, they were just recovering a body.

That's how I want to go.

8. My grandmother's name was Arizona and her sister was named Nevada, but this was
in the 1870s. I was amazed, growing up in Texas, that anyone would name their children for territories.

P.S. My grandmother and great aunt were referred to as Zona and Vada (pronounced vayda).
