Betty Hall, An 87-Year Old New Hampshire State Representative, Says She Will Join CodePink Fast and Is Willing to Die for Impeachment

Dear CodePink Women and Impeachment Friends

Susan Serpa called last night and told me about Betty Hall's commitment to Impeachment (above). I burst out crying. I told her, "I don't want anyone to die for this!" My appointment with Conyers has been postponed for the fourth time. I told Rinia, Conyers' scheduler, "There are now thirty-four people fasting and each time he postpones our meeting, I have to let them know. There are a lot of people counting on me ..." Then I told her about Betty and the tears started flowing. When she heard this, she seemed to understand the seriousness of the situation . I could tell she was moved. She said she'd try to fit me in sooner, but if I didn't hear back from her, the meeting would be this Friday@ 10:00am. I will let you know what happens.

Here's Betty's story: She is a 14 term state representative from New Hampshire and has introduced HR 24 to the state house, which asks for the Impeachment of Bush and Cheney. The public hearing for the resolution is next Tuesday, February 19 (the day after President's day). She is joining the CodePink Fast.

Susan told me, "She is 87 years old and refuses to eat until Conyers begins impeachment proceedings." Betty told Susan, "I've had a good life. I can't think of any better way to end it."

12. I'll say. What do they think they're accomplishing?
Impeachment goes nowhere without 17 Republican senators signing on. Period. Unless you can guarantee that, calling for impeachment proceedings is just so much mental masturbation. And I guarantee that a hunger strike by an anti-war group is not going to bring Republican senators into the fold.

16. WTF?
I see the mellow OMC has vanished. Ugh. Why exactly is Betty Hall, who lives but a few miles from me, and with whom I am acquianted, an idiot? Please be specific.

21. To Be Willing To Die For A Useless Cause, Is Just Quite Simply Stupid; Period.
It's a ridiculous act and the condonation of it is equally stupid.

And I'm still pretty mellow, but I don't think I was ever in a mode in which I would condone someone risking their lives for such reasons. It's stupid, it's melodramatic, and if those around her CARED AN OUNCE for her they would refuse to let her do such a thing.

24. For example: Gandhi
Who when the cause got completely hopeless was quite ready to put his life on the line through prolonged hunger strikes. The more hopeless the situation was, the more ready he was to sacrifice.

Or, for example, the warriors of Masada, or the vastly outnumbered Spartans standing against the Persian Army, or that Chinese gentleman who, quite hopelessly and perhaps uselessly, chose to stand alone against the tanks. Or how about the White Rose movement in Nazi Germany? Surely their sacrifice was hopeless, certainly it made little difference, so in a sense it was of no use. Were they 'quite simply stupid'?

25. Your Comparing This Woman To Them Has To Be One Of The Most Insane Things I've Read.
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 05:08 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
I've said my piece, and feel no need to continue since I know exactly where it will lead. If you want to condone monumental acts of stupidity like what she's doing, to a level that it makes you and her look insane, you have that right. But it is a bit of a sign of an irrational mind. But when confronted with an irrational perspective, I'm learning it's usually best to avoid the irrationality than continue to try and reason with it. See ya! :hi:

19. Is she an idiot because she's sacrificing more than you would ever consider?

"Some people have truly lost their minds,...", you FEAR? YOU WOULD NOT BE HERE had "some people (NOT)lost their minds" establishing an independent, 'democratic' institution some years before you arrived.

Seriously, I think you have an issue with WHAT IT TAKES to sustain the 'life, liberty and happiness' you appear to take for granted.

That is sorry and I won't feel nowhere near as bad as you when this nation bears the full weight of its pain.

22. There's A Difference Between An Honorable Sacrifice And A Worthless Sacrifice.
This sacrifice is worthless, and just plain dumb.

You want to care about people? Then get your head out of your ass and care enough to not condone shit like this, and tell her to come back down to reality and NOT risk her life for a worthless cause. THAT would be caring. Letting her go forward with this is extremely selfish and almost evil, just for sake of you getting attention and headlines that will do NOTHING to further your cause, but can make you feel good that at least something was mentioned. What a fucking disgraceful position to have.

28. Why are some people here always offended by the protests of others?
Your posts here are seething with hatred. Betty Hall's protest offends you, and yet it really has nothing to do with you. But you are not alone. Every act of public protest against the war, against this illegal regime, is met here with the same reaction - outrage that others are willing to act. It is baffling. What is your problem?

9. Impeachophobia Kills
Brave Betty may well be simply the first "domestic" victim of this beltway-blinded insanity.

Gitmo might well have been boarded up by now. And untold numbers of US troops and Iraqis might have been spared the bushcheney paranoia meatgrinder.

Impeachment is years overdue.

It is still our ONLY moral, patriotic option.

23. Betty Hall is great! A few years ago, she got *CARRIED OFF* by the police from an anti-Bush demo.

Betty Hall is great! A few years ago, she got *CARRIED OFF*
by the police from an anti-Bush demo. Apparently, she just
refused to move farther and farther and farther away from
der Pretzeldent's sight line just because the police were
somehow allowing the pro-Bush people to be about ten times
closer.

The New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union ended up defending
her against the bogus charges; she/they won of course.
