PERINO: "U.S. soldiers - are too immature to be trusted"
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 06:08 PM by kpete
US soldiers need a ‘troop manual’ because they are just a bunch of ignorant 18 year olds who can’t even drink.

CIA torturers are mature, well trained 40 year olds who know how to use Nazi tactics appropriately.

************************

The White House has confirmed that President Bush plans to veto legislation prohibiting the CIA from using waterboarding and bringing the agency’s interrogation methods in line with the Army Field Manual.

In today’s White House press briefing, spokeswoman Dana Perino defended the veto decision by citing the age of CIA interrogators. She said that they are well-trained “professionals” with “an average age of 40.” U.S. soldiers, on the other hand, are too immature to be trusted, argued Perino. That’s why they need the Army Field Manual:

This is done at the CIA, and it is done by professionals who are given hundreds of hours of training, who are — I think General Hayden said an average age of 40; who are being asked to do very hard work in order to protect Americans.

The Army Field Manual is a perfectly appropriate document that is important for young GIs, some so young that they’re not even able to legally get a drink in the states where they’re from.

3. "You must be this old to torture."
Why don't they go by height instead, like at fun parks? Just about as arbitrary.

6. I don't get it. What does age have to do with morality? Seems to me the AFM is a superior document.

8. The "new" Army Field Manual.
“FM 2-22.3 is an important part of the Army’s commitment to improve human intelligence (HUMINT) operations, including interrogation operations. It broadens the functions and capabilities of our HUMINT Soldiers and incorporates lessons learned into our doctrine,” said Lt. Gen. John F. Kimmons, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence. “This FM represents the result of a very extensive coordination process throughout the Department of Defense involving our most senior leaders and combatant commanders.”

The new manual clarifies military intelligence and military police roles and responsibilities; specifies requirements for non-DoD access to detainees under DoD control; specifies that commanders are responsible and accountable for compliance with provisions of FM 2-22.3 and for ensuring humane detainee treatment; and notes that all military personnel are responsible and accountable for immediately reporting suspected detainee abuse.

The new manual, in accordance with Geneva Conventions, explicitly prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, and is in complete compliance with the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005.

too immature to torture properly?

but the CIA is?

mature enough to torture properly? because torture isn't torture if it's done properly?

Yeah...alrighty then

the army needs a manual telling them not to torture because torture is illegal?

but the CIA doesn't need a manual telling them not to torture because they are mature enough to torture?

So..uh...a mature (read :age, as age is the measure Perino used) person can torture?

So soldiers aren't professionals (though we hear all the time from the WH that they are)
but the CIA are professionals?...professional torturers, per Perino?

and this is seen as a good argument by the WH?

There are some very immature soldiers...but do they really want to argue that the degree of maturity decides on who can and can't torture? (because torture is, you know, illegal... regardless of a person's maturity)

or that professional torturers are somehow more desirable? (because torture is, you know, illegal... regardless of how professional someone may or may not be)

Seriously? She's seriously arguing that?

and people are falling for it?

and I won't even get into the assumption that with age comes maturity.

so...torture is the mature thing to do?

who fucking knew?

13. How old are you Dana?
Maybe a little bit of projection there? Maybe in another 5 years you will have learned enough to be professional in a job? Maybe you can start by studying this:
