20 Metal-Filled Lollipops Seized By Deputies At Elementary School
Candy Made In China, Sheriff Says

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office seized at least 20 Pokemon brand lollipops filled with metal shavings meant for an elementary school Valentine's Day party less than a day after a woman found a blade in her child's candy.

Deputies confiscated the lollipops from Kathleen Elementary School Thursday. The candy was supposed to be handed out for Valentine's Day at the school, Local 6 has learned.

The candy was purchased from a Dollar General Store in Polk County, the sheriff's office said.

Wednesday, a Central Florida woman found part of a razor blade in her 10-year-old's Valentine's Day candy.

The woman said she found the blade in a Pokemon lollipop she purchased at a Dollar General Store in Lakeland.

3. I'm usually pretty cautious about buying any sort of food at a dollar...
...store. This really doesn't make me more or less cautious when I am shopping there, though. Caveat emptor.

4. I don't know why I just gave this the 5th rec....
Probably because my Mom is down in Florida and she's 76...

She says...

"I'm from New York City, and I thought I grew up around some crazy people, but people in FLORIDA are all out of their freaking minds"...

I may not agree 100% with her, but let's face when you hear something crazy has happened, you think Florida or Texas.

And I've lived in both places so I can say... yeah that's about right.

Now, I'm in Kansas.

Why can't I live someplace cool?
Like Oregon or Vermont?

7. Probably manufactured in China
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 12:05 AM by PSPS
The product's manufacturer, Sherwood Brands of Maryland, is cooperating. The company could not be reached for comment.

According to the Sherwood Brands website, "Sherwood Brands is a leading marketer of premium confectionary products and gift items which specializes in seasonal product lines."

Hmmm. Sounds like they might be an actual american manufacturer that actually makes something here for consumption here, doesn't it? Well, you'd be wrong!

First, notice how they slipped "marketer" in their self-description so you'd likely mistake it as "maker."

And then there's this from a five-year-old press release, we see what they do. They apparently buy poisoned or adulterated food from China and just "assemble" it here. Or at least they used to. The "assembly" was being planned to move to China too.

"The assembly of gift sets for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day is done primarily at our facility in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Until recently, this involved the packaging of components purchased in the Far East, primarily China. We have implemented a new program to pre-pack most of the gift sets in China for shipment either directly to customers in the U.S. or via our Massachusetts plant. We expect to begin to benefit from the lower costs associated with this effort in the current fiscal year.

9. We will see how they like those "lower costs" after they get their butts sued off
I hope they go out of biz. Sounds like most of the company's workers have been outsourced anyway.

or something that Toki Wartooth of DethKlok had endorsed.

I guess Pokemon is just that much more brutal.
