Children. You're Giving Me a Headache
Children. You're Giving Me a Headache

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — A Swedish preschool has been criticized for banning its children from wearing striped and spotted clothing since the patterns give one of its teachers severe migraine attacks.

The preschool, in Gallivare, 710 miles north of Stockholm, imposed the ban in one of its areas three years ago. But recent complaints from a parent meant the unusual dress code got nationwide attention Thursday.

Myran preschool Principal May Norberg said the ban had never caused any problems. Until now.

Norberg said the parent complained that the ban prevented the children from wearing what they, or their parents, chose.

Norberg said the ban was imposed after a staff meeting three years ago. The teacher had complained about recurring migraine attacks when working with children wearing spotted or striped patterns.

2. Funny story. I say the parent is inconsiderate.
It's not much to ask people to do the lady one little favor, even though she is, probably, off her rocker, IMHO.

5. Migraines are nothing to make light of
I've only had a couple in my life, but my DH has suffered from them all his life. Migraines can be debilitating. And they are not like regular headaches, where you can take a couple of Tylenol and be okay in a few minutes. Once triggered, they can last for hours, and be something you have to recuperate from.

His problem stems from food allergies, but I've read that some people can be *triggered* by light, or color patterns. I agree with you, that parent was inconsiderate. I'd use a harsher term, but your's is more PC.

I doubt the teacher is *off her rocker*. Wouldn't you request some help in keeping your work environment free of potentially dangerous problems?

6. Thanks for enlightening me
I did not know it was common for migraines to be triggered like that. Now, I know. At least I wanted to protect her though.

8. I've had to race to the ER too many times with migraines as the culprit
Feeling totally helpless, and wondering if he was stroking out.

It's too bad the parent was more concerned with style choices than the poor woman's health.

3. My daughter had a fourth grade teacher
who was allergic to perfumes and hairsprays. The smell gave her terrible headaches.

At the beginning of the year, she told everyone this, and asked them not to wear those things to school. After I got to know her, I found out that she had had only a few problems with this request over the years. Once in awhile, she had to take a student aside or call a parent.

When they were working on an addition to the school, they used a strong smelling adhesive when putting down floor tiles. This teacher became ill and had to have a sub until things were aired out.

I feel for this teacher in Sweden. I hope she gets good compliance with her request. I know there are schools here that go to unusual lengths to protect students from peanut allergies and similar problems. I hope they can do the same for the teacher.

11. Sounds like "reasonable accomodation" for the Swedish version of the Americans w/Disabilities Act
I hope the principal can make the complaining parent understand.

My sister gets migraines, and they are a hideous disorder.

12. I used to suffer from migraines
The last headache that I had lasted 2 weeks--bought me a CT scan, spinal tap, and more than one trip to the ER.
Ended up seeing a neurologist who specialized ONLY in migraine headaches. Apparently that headache did some vascular damage.
He put me on calcium channel blockers and low dose anti-depressants for a couple of years with some weird pill for breakthrough headaches.
Thankfully, I haven't had a migraine in years.
They can be incapacitating.
I feel sorry for the teacher.:(
