Poll question: Have you dated outside your 'race'?
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 06:19 AM by Breeze54
I'm only asking because I saw a thread about race in GD-P yesterday and I kept thinking about it
and I had actually been thinking about this topic for the last month or so anyway and I wondered
how many here at DU have actually dated a person not of their race. But after that post last night?
I just thought I'd ask the question. I hope I can devise a poll to truthfully reflect the question though. *gulp* ;)

I'm not a social scientist. Can you tell? :sarcasm:

To start? Yes, I have dated African Americans and Hispanics and... Norwegians! :P

But I have never dated anyone from my own background... Irish.

Go figure. Isn't that weird? It is to me.

Go ahead and correct my poll. I'm sure it's flawed but I tried.

He looks intimidating, but is actually calm and gentle. Enthusiastic,
responsible, even tempered and fearless. An excellent guard and
watchdog that is easy to train....."

Nice looking dog! ;)

But doesn't count in this human poll. Sorry.

But sounds like the perfect human mate. ;)

10. Sure
I was heavily involved with an Asian woman for a while,
back when I was 19.

I don't know how nitpicky you want to get with the term
"race," but as my background contains some Semitic blood
(my background is Eastern European Mongrel) and my wife is
a pure-blooded German blonde (family geneology dates back
to the year 1473), if you're a Nazi, then I've been on an
interracial date for the last 34 years now. If you're not
a Nazi, then take yer pick! LOL

(We never gave it a thought)

11. "Orientals" ???? You might want to edit your poll to change this word to "Asians"
The term "oriental" to refer to a person of Asian descent has been outdated for a long, long time. In fact, you might hear a person explain it like the following: "Oriental is a rug, Asian is a person."

Not only have I dated outside my race (I am caucasian), but I married outside my race. My wife is originally from China. Our first child, a son, was born four weeks ago. I couldn't be happier.

17. no problem with that as I am a mixed race individual myself so my answer would be yes I have
English, Cherokee and German for the most part. I fell in love with the prettiest person I had ever met up to that point but it never developed into a dating situation as I was about to cause a race riot at the company where we worked, A most beautiful Black girl just dripping with charm and poise. I finally just quit working there so as to not be so heart broken because of the circumstances that would not allow us to date.
dang it breeze I wished you hadn't brought that up now ;-)

18. Yes.
I dated a young black man when I was a teenager. Race definitely had a hand in breaking things up. Neither family was thrilled about it.

Then I dated an Indian man in my late 20's. Still one of the sexiest men I know.

19. Out of 150 employees where I work there are very few under 30 women who don't exclusively
Date African Americans. But I chalk it up to the influential power of media and Empty V hip hop culture, not from any desire to break down old racial barriers. Plus, there seems to be an inherent glorification of racial stereotypes involved in this, as the young women seem to prefer the men who consciously go out of their way to project very racist and sexist/misogynistic stereotypes.

22. Just an observation. Many of the women acknowledge they seek the "criminal bad boy" types, which is
Exactly the prevailing stereotype/image sold in the media. The young men adopt and assimilate to be "cool," and the young women in turn are attracted to what constitutes that "cool." This particular dilemma of media induced mass affectation has a great deal to do with many issues/problems our country is mired in ... including the many illusory aspects of our phony democracy.

32. The bad boys, huh?
There are a couple of young women in my family who go from one bad boy to another. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. I just chalk it up to a generational difference. Either that or my young cousins are batshit crazy.

38. It's a highly volatile topic to discuss...invariably someone will get angry/offended
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 11:48 AM by Echo In Light
To hear anyone make an objective cultural observation on some of these touchy issues angers some. When it comes to indoctrination and the media's power of suggestion, many prefer to remain in denial as to its overall efficacy. People don't want to believe that they are indeed that susceptible to external coercion and groupthink.

29. Honest answer
Yes, and I probably wouldn't do it again. Not because of the difference in race, I am fullblood Lakota, but because the cultural divide is a very wide gulf between people of my traditional culture and almost any other group of americans.

Not saying *never*, but just not likely.

34. I married outside my race.
Well, sorta. My mother is white, my father "looks" black but is really Heinz 57. I "look" black. My husband is the whitest white boy that was ever born white and everyone I've ever met in his family are too. My family is all mixed up and by marriage we've adopted about every mix of racial makeup I can think of.

We struggled a little with my husband's extended family. His immediate family was just wonderful. My family is worse than Stephen Colbert. They just don't even "see" race anymore. (kidding, of course).

:)

against multicultuaral dating, I was just never asked out by anyone non-white. If I were younger, maybe that would be different because the town I live in is much more multi-ethnic now than when I was dating.

My ancestors came from many places, but I do not consider those places my race. My skin is a certain color, but I do not consider that race.I am a USAnian citizen, but do not consider that race. I like to participate in the three legged race at picnics, perhaps you mean that?

47. won't answer polls after the poll snooping/gotcha scandal but...
sure i've dated outside my race, who hasn't, even bigots do, who people hope to get lucky with has little to do with their attitudes toward that person having civil rights, equal pay in the workplace, aspiring to public office, and so on

consider the huge numbers of men throughout history who dated women and even married them, without a thought, even though they thought of them as inferior in the sight of god himself -- wamting to sex someone doesn't mean you think that someone is your equal, now does it? for some twists of mind, it means exactly the reverse!

you won't learn much from a poll about who dates who, methinks, some people date outside their race because it's truly about the person, others because they are bigots who figure it's easier to get over on that race (certain fat old white men who prefer to purchase their encounters in thailand might spring to mind), just because someone dates outside their race you can't figure them for one of the good guys -- you have to look closer
