Lieberman says some waterboarding OK
By PETER URBAN

...........

"We are at war," Lieberman said. "I know enough from public statements made by Osama bin Laden and others as well as classified information I see to know the terrorists are actively planning, plotting to attack us again. I want our government to be able to gather information again within both the law and Geneva Convention."

In the worst case scenario — when there is an imminent threat of a nuclear attack on American soil — Lieberman said that the president should be able to certify the use of waterboarding on a detainee suspected of knowing vital details of the plot.

"You want to be able to use emergency tech to try to get the information out of that person," Lieberman said. Of course, Lieberman believes such authority has limits. He does not believe the president could authorize having hot coals pressed on someone's flesh to obtain that information.

The difference, he said, is that waterboarding is mostly psychological and there is no permanent physical damage. "It is not like putting burning coals on people's bodies. The person is in no real danger. The impact is psychological," Lieberman said. Lieberman said that his position on waterboarding differs from that of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who he has endorsed as a presidential candidate. As a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam, McCain was tortured. McCain, he said, believes waterboarding is torture.

Common Article 3 of the Senate-ratified Geneva Conventions prohibits all cruel treatment of detainees, including torture, which the Senate-ratified U.N. Convention Against Torture defines as “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession …” Article VI of the U.S. Constitution makes Senate-ratified treaties “law of the land,” and the War Crimes Act of 1996 makes violations of Common Article 3 federal crimes.

3. Repiggies are amazing great at defending the undefencable.
Lieberman is a special case of sad.

First he lost his party.

Now he has lost his mind.

What a sad man.

6. The Geneva Conventions state something different, Joe, they say it IS torture
and your support of it (and the other things you've supported) make you a war criminal, so off to the Hague with you.

7. Time To Shut Down This "We Are At War" Crap
Get ready...this is going to be the constant harping of the GOOPies as they get more and more desperate as we get closer to the election. The hyperbole will be kicked to high boil and we'll get fearmongering on a scale unseen in history. If it's not the A-rabs and "Islamofascists"...it's those damned brown-skinned Frito Banditos climbing over the border...or its those colored folks trying to take over our government. Trust me, there won't be a fear card that won't be played...it's ALL they have to go with.

So...if we are at war, then let's act like a country at war. Let's start with rationing precious resources...ration gas and put price controls on the price. Let's raise taxes to make sure the war is paid for and our military gets every thing they need...not some half-assed police action that turns into a "war of attrition". Let's have a draft with no exclusions or exemptions...send all 5 of Mittens kids to Baghdad and relieve the stress on the forces that are already there. If they want this war, let them fight it.

We are NOT at war...except with ourselves. We have inserted ourselves into Iraq and totally destroyed the country...and our economy and military in the process. The only war being waged right now is on the middle class and the poor...those who pay the real costs for the rich man's games. We have a facist regime hellbent on lining their pockets than protecting this country. And hopefully others see this bullshit for what it is.

Here's hoping Holy Joe gets a nice seat in the docket in the Hague along with all the other war criminals. As a Jew, he is an embarassment to my faith and heritage. I guess the term "Never Again" has a statue of limitations.
