This always leaves a mark. It's absence on network television, the cable news networks, the 60 Minutes video journalism shows is "the coverage," the proof that these networks, for a long time, were nothing more than the PR arms of the corporations that own them. They remain so today. Why would anybody ever expect that these entities would, on a consistent basis, ever do other than represent the corporatist line.

Here's a thread on that protest with a few posts by people who were there, including modesty forbids.

In terms of confronting the enemy, that was one of the most uplifting, affirming and just plain great days I've had since the early '70s and all the cops vs students confrontations back then.

There's apparently another thread on the subject in that day's LBN, but I wasn't able to find it. Anyone else care to try?

Nothing could make me prouder of this city than that special Little Beirut greeting, reserved for all members of the Bush criminal enterprise, but particularly for the codpiece in chief, Mr Mission Accomplished.

Remember how it was back then? It was virtual heresy to say bad things about our war president. Five to 10 thousand heretics who knew the real story descended on Portland that day to present an opposing view.

It was such an amazing feeling to be among thousands of people who had Bush completely figured out from day one and needed no further instructions.

It felt even better because this protest was a marching insult to the Pavlovian flag-wavers who infested the country in those days. Same assholes who supported our troops by getting about 8 MPH in their ribbon-festooned Navigators. Same scumbags who didn't know anything outside what cheerleading, softball-tossing, incompetent mass media told them -- and we all know how well that works.

That same 90 percent of Americans who suddenly discovered a profound love for Bush, war and imperialism on 9/11. The same BushBots who, post-9/11, proved themselves to be nothing but simplistic, cowardly chowder-heads willing to be led around by the nose by a strutting, fear-mongering nitwit and his snarling, malevolent puppet master. And then they went shopping to show their patriotism.

So yeah, it was a great fucking day. It was my first real proof that there were more than a few hundred furious people scattered around the country, manning their keyboards and communicating with other pissed off shut-ins.

And I'm glad we were both part of it.

Hope all's well with you, Steve, and that the kid's doing fine, too.

Sure enough. That's when the tear gas let loose. That's when the notorious picture of the older woman in a choke hold was taken. That's when the baby was pepper sprayed.
