I have a few things to say here about people on TV clamoring for more security and monitoring of the 'mentally ill. I think my voice needs to be heard too, being called
:mentally ill: myself. I have been on at least thirty different kinds of "medications" over the years and I have had around 7 different psych diagnosis..
This is important to say because apparently most of those medicines failed and most my diagnosis were wrong. Why is that? Maybe because psychiatrist sometimes are human and guess?
Psychiatry has a low cure rate.

Sometimes they have the opposite effect Like the well known SSRI problem (prozac ,Zoloft,Paxil etc.)that SSRI's can actually increase thoughts and impulses to suicide in some depressed people who take it..
And there are implants now to force medication compliance even if the patient does not take the medicines.
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2003/09/26/drug_implant_offers_hope_spurs_worry/http://www.nature.com/npp/journal/v26/n6/full/1395869a.htmlhttp://www.newswithviews.com/Mary/starrett53.htmImagine in order to get out of a psych lockup you must submit to having a drug dispenser implanted in your body under your skin.An implant you cannot remove .What if it causes side effects or you develop an allergy to it? What if your therapist is on vacation, what then?
Reality is: The "mentally ill" & Psych survivors are one segment of the population, that upon breaking no law can get every human right , constitutional right afforded to all citizens, and their dignity stripped away by force just on the say so of 1 person.
That person is the shrink. There is no trial, no jury, no appeal. The psych hearing is a starr chamber basically. By writ of a shrinks pen the patient can be locked up against their will if they refuse to commit themselves"voluntarily" and be stripped and forced into a gown or to be naked, locked in a room, restrained , observed and have drugs forced into their bodies against their will.
No other segment of the population suffers such degradation, domination social stigma and de-legitimization.
One other population might be this vulnerable, and have no rights are children in the care of abusive or neglectful caretakers.
Also some of these psych drugs are very powerful, have horrible side effects. If these side effects are hard to deal with the patient may refuse to take them.A state shrink meets with a patient maybe once every 2 months for around 5 minutes.
Here is a bit of what these side effects are like
"A certain number of persons killing themselves can be expected to be suffering from drug induced akathisia – an extreme inner restlessness, a feeling of having to creep out of ones skin, a completely unbearable condition. It is created by the psychiatric drugs, not by any “underlying disease”. Akathisia is a condition that can make a person commit violent acts – against self or others. It is a condition officially recognized and taken up in the warning texts for the drugs. A number of persons have been affected by mania or hypomania – again created by the drugs; conditions also officially recognized; conditions that can lead to suicide. "
http://psychrights.org/Articles/SwedishSuicides.htmI have had akathesia, myself and I can tell you it IS torture.
Some of the side effects of psych meds are sometimes permanent. Here are videos of the damage.
http://www.wemove.org/td/td_sym.htmlHow would you like to be put at risk for THIS against your will?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0EbgpyztCA&feature=relatedHow about THIS one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLbiaTtdnL4&feature=relatedAs for "Help"..Do you think subjecting anyone to this against their will, justifies this happening to someone in a mental ward ?Well it can happen . I spent 18 months in a similar kind of room.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4DYBoc0MF8Psych drugs can feel like a chemical straight jacket, it can kill your creativity ,dull your senses, and flatten your emotions, make you so tired all you think about is sleep or so ravenously hungry you can't stop eating. All that some drugs do is make people easy to manage. The drugs don't heal anything really , they just suppress symptoms.
"Note carefully, however, that psychiatric medications are **not curative.** The medications merely suppress unpleasant symptoms for as long as you take the medications."
http://www.guidetopsychology.com/meds.htmMental illness is not a physical disease you can prove a person has with a blood test like diabetes. The Drug companies would like people to believe that but it is not so.
http://members.fortunecity.com/siriusw/Biochemical-Imbalance.htmLastly did you know psychology/psychiatry has a long and horrible history of being affiliated with torture and social control..That even darkens the APA's ethical judgments to this day?
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=10903 Some History of psychiatric treatments.........
"In the asylums, many experimental methods of treatment were tried. One method was terror. Dr. Benjamin Rush, sometimes called the father of American psychiatry, was the first president of the American Psychiatric Association and his face still appears on the official seal. The most renown doctor of the time, Dr. Rush (one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence) wrote in 1818, "Terror acts powerfully upon the body through the medium of the mind and should be employed in the cure of madness. Fear accompanied with pain and the sense of shame has sometimes cured the disease." Dr. Rush advocated and practiced terror by designing and using the straitjacket, the tranquilizer chair and "fear of death" on numerous inmates in 19th century lunatic asylums.
http://geocities.com/sighcodog/history.htmlhttp://www.mindfully.org/Health/2003/Mad-In-AmericaJun03.htmPeople that think forced treatment will stop school shootings are not thinking of the repercussions of their reactions to a traumatic event if it is made into law, will harm.People need to understand pre-emptive profiling than FORCING a person to be incarcerated and drugged will NOT change them. It cannot help unless they are WILLING to change. And force isn't exactly the best way to make someone be more likely to want to change. It is just as vicious as terror as a cure for mental illness was. And we all know how well pre-emptive doctrine works for 'terrorism'.
http://akmhcweb.org/Articles/StigmaisSocialDeath.htmSo I ask people, do they really want the therapeutic state to lock people up, for being goth, liking horror movies, paganism and being different, pre emptively? If you think it's wrong for homeland security to do it to air passengers and immigrants why is it OK for the people suspected of being"mentally ill?
I fear it because Most people are not sophisticated enough to recognize a narcissistic, authoritarian or psychopath personality that could be a real danger by a simple interview and looking at how they dress and checking how nice they submit to intrusive school authorities asking personal questions. But that is what school administrators will do to ally public and parental fears and a lot of innocents will be subjected to coercion, trauma, drugs and stigmas. Is that OK for a democratic free society to do? or is it more like a totalitarian society?
Think about it,are you willing to sell away others freedoms who are not like you so YOU feel secure?
So why do it to people who are "mentally ill"? For the normals are more like the mental than anyone dares to admit.
