On Zogby, Helen Thomas is shown with her DU roses and talks about impeachment!

I just watched this week's "Viewpoint with James Zogby" show on my PVR, which featured Helen Thomas talking about the current presidential candidates and comparing them to who she was working with in the past. GREAT lady and perspectives that echo what many of us here have been saying.

Of course James Zogby didn't ask her about impeachment. Wouldn't have expected him to, but a North Carolina caller asked if congress would ever have the guts to start impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney. Her answer:

"No, I'm sure they won't! You only impeach Democrats! (she then laughs facetiously and Zogby quickly goes to the break)

Then when they went through a segment of photos showing her past career, one of them is her standing in front of our DU array of flowers! I'm guessing that she supplied them with these photos, so I think that speaks HIGHLY for how much she or others close to her valued our gesture to her earlier!

1. That's VERY cool!
I love Helen. She's one of the few willing to stand up to this administration. She even quit a long-time, probably beloved, job because of the Moonie takeover of UPI.

I remember those roses; I contributed to them. How wonderful that she still remembers them.

DU chipped in and got her 100 dozen roses. Of course when the photographer arranged them a lot better, but DU pretty much filled the conference room with roses. It was an honor to be there and to have a chance to talk to her. What a great lady.

12. She was almost overwhelmed. And to the OP,
Her colleagues there that day were absolutely ecstatic, as was her assistant. They brought their own cameras into the room to take some pictures. It was the editor who called press in to get the pics.

Hang on... I'm hoping to post her whole interview in 4 segments to Youtube for the first time (close to 40 minutes of stuff), and I'll alert this thread when that happens. Look for part 3. That will have BOTH the guy asking about impeachment AND the segment with the montage of images in it. The WHOLE interview is great and it is something with the various caller questions (they had an extra long question session this time), that you RARELY see with someone of her stature on the mainstream media. Someone even asked her about the recent Infraguard story we've been talking about the last day or so here.

I'd watch this while you can! Just noted that the second one was removed. I'd noted that there were other older Viewpoint episodes on Youtube, but perhaps I need to investigate more getting permission to put these up now. Anyway, if someone can, go ahead and make a screen grab of the appropriate frames here.

58. Not really a handful
She's extremely bright, very personable, and not in the least a powerhouse of
aggressiveness. She's pleasant, methodical, and doesn't miss a thing, which is
the main reason Presidents are apprehensive of her questions, the main reason
Republicans are terrified of her questions, and the main reason Bush considers
questions from her about the same way turkeys consider axes on Thanksgiving.

60. So do I
She doesn't have one personality for TV and one in private. At age 88, she
has no reason to. There are few people left with her experience who are still
active and lucid. I never get tired of being able to spend a couple of hours
with her when I'm in Washington. Truly the last of a generation of journalists
to whom principle outweighed air time and/or salary.

62. She was a close friend of my father's
He was a Washington journalist, too. I knew her from when I was very little.
When my dad passed away, I sort of filled in the gap, along with my DC-based
brother, and you're right--we do consider ourselves lucky to be among her
circle of friends.

By the way, if you're ever in Washington, check out her favorite restaurant:
Mama Ayesha's (Helen is of Lebanese origin). It is a trip back to Beirut, ca. 1920.
The food, by the way, is so good, to call it merely "memorable" would be almost
an insult. It is not far from where she lives, and she goes there often, so you might
even get to see her at a nearby table and say hi!
