What I think it shows (or at least I'm sure McCain would like it to show) is that there's good DNA for longevity, health, and sustained intelligence -- because by all accounts the elder Mrs. McCain is as sharp as a tack.

Not all white people look alike, but some unrelated people bear a family resemblance to each other.

I grew up some 7,000 miles from the islands of my ancestors (Britain and Ireland). There was no community of Irish-Americans in Hawaii, not as such. I looked like my own family as expected, but that was it. By traveling 3,000 miles to San Diego, I could be with another bunch of people who looked like "us"--again family.

Fast-forward about 25 years I'm settled in California and I'm visiting my sister in Boston, where she settled. On every street corner is someone who looks like our Aunt Mickey, our Uncle Ed, our Grandma, our Mom, and our siblings.

I had no idea until then that my family, in America for generations, fit so firmly into an "Irish" genotype. An Irishwoman I met when I was in my late 40s said I could walk through any village in Ireland and be taken for a native if I kept my mouth shut.

People do tend to marry those whose backgrounds are similar and who look like their relatives. It's a comfort zone. Not a hundred percent, or humans wouldn't all be 13th-cousins or whatever Pete Seeger said. By growing up in Hawaii, I was conditioned to expect ethnic intermarriage.

When John met Cindy, the attraction wasn't necessarily Oedipal. She may look like his Mom for the same reason I saw "relatives" in Boston. Or we could all be blowing smoke, which we often do around here.
