Is there a time presidential candidates have to declare by?

Assuming of course that it has to be before a party's convention, but is there a time when they must declare? Thanks.

1. Not really.

Technically, someone could never declare and still be nominated at the convention. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

3. Theoretically, the convention could nominate someone who never declared

his/her candidacy...obviously farfetched but wouldn't be illegal or improper. :-)

4. Gore could announce the day before the Convention and be

nominated.

5. Given the number of early primaries - late summer

is probably the end time. Unless your name is Al. He could wait a little later -- but not much.

pressure to declare who you are supporting when it seems that all those contending haven't yet declared themselves and I was getting confused. Again.
