USDA: Most recalled beef has probably been eaten

(CNN) -- Federal officials are trying to track down the 143 million pounds of beef recalled Sunday, but they say that most of it has probably been eaten.

Cattle carcass scraps are dropped into a truck at the Westland/Hallmark slaughterhouse last month.

Keith Williams, a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman, said investigators have found no cases of illness related to the recalled meat.

The beef recall came after inspectors said they found "clear violations" of USDA regulations at a California slaughterhouse that has been accused of mistreating cows.

"We do not know how much of this product is out there at this time. We do not feel this product presents a health risk of any significance," said Dick Raymond, the undersecretary of agriculture for food safety. "But the product was produced in noncompliance with our regulations, so therefore we do have to take this action." Video Watch what sparked the recall »

Federal officials called the recall by Westland/Hallmark Meat Packing Company the largest beef recall in U.S. history.

2. Great, mad cow disease epidemic.
Well, that would certainly explain GD:P.

4. The fog the media is operating in.
Cows usually don't show disease until they are at least two years old. If you take a look around you'll find that the meat packers avoid taking cows that are two years or older.

Mad cow disease doesn't show up for years, most or all the meat has already been consumed. The fact that no one has gotten sick yet means nothing but the media is trumpeting that the beef was safe since no one got sick.

Go figure.

5. Or no one who got sick traced it back to those cattle.
That doesn't mean no one got sick.

Furthermore, what kind of a "recall" is it, if the meat is not recalled because it has been consumed?

6. They "cannot" trace illness to the beef
because the cows were never tested for any illnesses whatsover!

Meanwhile it is that old doublespeak "there is no evidence that..." when they know damn well that the reason there is no evidence is because they did not collect any evidence (ie test the animals)!

Better to grind 'em up and feed 'em to kids in schools.
