TALKERS Magazine 2008 Heavy Hundred
TALKERS Magazine 2008 Heavy Hundred

Ed Shultz comes in as the highest ranked progressive at 8th. followed by:

16th - Alan Colmes
23rd - Thom Hartmann
28th - Stephanie Miller
31st - Lionel
40th - Randi Rhodes

I'm surprised that Randi Rhodes dropped so much. I remember her being the top rated Air America talent. Now she's 3rd. Oh well.

2. Randi often has good things to say, but sadly she is often shrill and whiney
alas...

Glad to see Thom Hartman on the rise..

3. How in the world does Ed Schultz rate higher than Thom?
That's just weird.

7. I think because he's on both satellite radio services and
he gets better Arbitron ratings on terrestrial radio then Thom.

8. It easy for Ed Schultz to be top--all of his competition has been taken away, removed
Sam Seder, Rachel, Jeanine all played musical chairs and then the time changes took care of the rest of his competition.

If anybody thinks Rush Limbaughs twin brother is what American progressives are choosing to listen to, I have some land in Florida I want to sell...on Ebay...

P.S. I completed an Arbitron book about two years ago it was full of Air America listening. They never sent me another survey. I truly believe they don't want to see progressive radio thrive with voices like Randi or Mike, etc. Instead, they want progressive light with Stephanie and duplicitous Schultz in the lead.

I don't believe these results reflect the reality of progressive choice rather they show what happened after radio shakeups happened that were designed to achieve this result.

11. AA has repeatedly shot itself in the foot with programming changes
Firing Malloy, reducing Sam Seder's time, switching Rachel Maddow's show around.

Only Hartmann for Franken was a smart move. Unfortunately I'm afraid Thom is a bit too um, cerebral, to appeal to the average Amurkin radio listener. I'm amazed and pleased he ranks as high as he does.

I like Stephanie Miller and even Schultz at times, but they are ranked high mostly because their network has done a good job promoting their shows, AA's promotion just sucks.

10. I've heard that Talker Magazine is owned by right wingers that
deliberately over states rightwing talkers like Rush and Hannity's numbers. I just don't believe Rush continue to get 13 million listeners after his loyal support of George Bush.

12. I think the list is a joke
No way are many of these RW pundits still so influential. Especially the 2nd tier bunch.

And I was disappointed Rachel Maddow wasn't on the list - she's certainly gotten a higher profile in the last few months via her MSNBC appearances.

14. There's some more progressive hosts who made the list...
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 02:54 PM by CaseyBuck
However, they're on the name-only "honorable mention" list of the #101-250 talk shows hosts at the bottom of that page. Some those hosts include:

John Elliot
Rachel Maddow
Mike Malloy
Jay Marvin (from KKZN in Denver)

Malloy made the Heavy Hundred list in 1999, 2000, and 2003, back when we was with WLS and with IE America.
