Bush Appointed Judge Resigns After Cross Dressing DUI Arrest
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 02:48 PM by Ichingcarpenter
And where, you might ask, was the judge going that night dressed that way?

That I find this story so hilarious probably says more about me than the cross-dressing federal judge in question, but as they say these days, it is what it is. The punch line is probably the best part.

Somma worked in private practice for years in Boston before he was appointed to the bench by President Bush in December 2004.

Yes, the fact that Bush appointed him as a federal bankruptcy judge does crack me up, but let's start at the beginning.

Somma's Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan hit a pick-up truck from behind about 11:29 p.m. on Feb. 6, the police report said. No one was hurt.

Somma, who lives in Newbury, Mass., fumbled in his purse for his driver's license before handing it to the officer who later arrested him, the police report shows.

"He had a difficult time locating his license in his purse. He passed over it multiple times before removing it," officer Paul J. Thompson wrote in his report.

The officer offered no other details with regard to the judge's attire or accessories. Nor would representatives of the Manchester Police Department or the city solicitor's office, which worked out the negotiated plea agreement with Somma's lawyer...

But lots of other people did offer those details, of which Audrey Hepburn would have been proud.

When authorities removed him from the vehicle, they said he wore a black women's cocktail dress, fishnet stockings and high heels.

6. Some transvestites are straight
and it sounds like he might be one of them. He was smart enough to go to an "alternative" watering hole, at least.

Cops and nurses all know that when they smell alcohol on somebody and ask him how much he's had to drink, it should be tripled. In some cases, it can safely be quadrupled.

Still, it's nice to see the GOP is consistent in its family values, that of poorly repressed kinky sexuality and public drunkenness.

I have no trouble with cross dressers, transvestites, or whatever, as long as the person is not pretending to be some Holier Than Thou Conservative Family Values Straight Laced Uptight Dude -- and then sneaking out of the closet to secretly indulge his real self -- as sooooo many republicon homelanders do.

People have the right to dress up as they please. Making fun of a cross-dresser puts you on the same maturity level as a sniggering second-grader who just told a potty joke. Grow up.

Those are homophobic, transphobic terms, and people who think they're okay to use are no different than Republicans spewing homophobia.

It's like excusing racism from somebody because they're a Dem. That would be ridiculous, right? Why should homophobia and transphobia be any different?

20. He was a conservative judge and a Federalist
The Boston-based judge chose the bar in question, according to local rumor, because his wife, Wendy, was out of town and no one knew him in New Hampshire. Sounds like Wendy is pretty cool, though.

"I suspect that he will not be interested in talking to anyone from the newspaper, and I'm his wife," said a woman who answered the telephone at the judge's home yesterday. She referred media calls to Gary H. Wente, chief administrative officer for the First Circuit Courts.

Somma showed his sense of style to the end. He phoned in his resignation from a vacation spot in the Caribbean.

19. PM'ing you a quarter
I'm hardly transphobic. However, there is a large portion of the yammering class that is transphobic, homophobic, and just plain phobophobic, and that portion takes a great deal of delight in hammering on my gay, lesbian, transgendered, intersexed and questioning fellow citizens, as well as me for supporting them and their full inclusion and participation in society (including in the life my church congregation).

That segment of the yammering class also loves to paint in broad strokes the "perversion" and "unnaturalness" of my friends, and there is a segment of the political population that either agrees with that segment, or exploits their bigotry. By and large, those politicians reside in the Republican party, and pretend that "normal" Americans really have nothing to do with such "perverts." Of course, they do have quite a lot to do with sexual minorities, but propagating the fiction is vital to maintaining the yammerers in their political base.

So, when the truth seeps out like it does in this matter, a number of folks at DU use a certain shorthand to make themselves sound like the yammerers, who are convinced they are on the side of the angels, and have nothing to do with people the yammerers regard as so awful. And they're no more transphobic than me.

36. Yes, "prejudiced"
Like a 1950s-vintage McCarthyite, who saw Communists lurking under every bed, you're seeing "homophobia/transphobia" in every post, whether it's there or not. I provided an explanation for how those posts read, and you immediately resorted to name-calling, because that explanation doesn't fit with your stubborn desire to characterize them unfairly. If that's not prejudice, then the word doesn't have a meaning.

26. The Vile Howie Carr homos up the story and blames Patrick.
Linked through the alternet blog page is the Murdoch hate rag's Howie Carr's original story on this: "Judge Roberta goes a-courting" where the twisted homophobe Carr manages to make this about Deval Patrick and also manages to work Obama into it:

"And where the case couldn’t be fixed. Like Carl Stanley McGee, the $115,000-a-year Deval aide now charged with molesting a young boy in a Florida steam room, Judge Roberta forgot that there is still a large country out there where this sort of behavior is frowned upon, at least in public. That country is called America.

Oh well, it’s over now for the judge, at least until Deval can arrange a soft landing on the state bench, where he so obviously belongs. He got a bad ice cube, is all. There comes a night when the best gets tight, as Rudyard Kipling put it. It’s easy to straighten things out. Just have your “spouse” donate $1,000 to Barack Obama and you’re appointed the next day. That’s how things work around here now.

75. It was exactly what Carr's essay was doing.
But as you are more offended it seems by my description of his essay than the essay itself I apologize. Your concern for tagging posters here as homophobic when they aren't is far more important to you than going after the real bigots in the media who flaunt their bigotry down the runway for all to see. I understand that now. I will try to avoid pointing out the blatent homophobia in the media from now on out of regard for your sensitivity for calling things what they are.

Yes I would have used similar terminology to describe a deliberately racist essay.

55. Audrey Hepburn would not have approved.
A cocktail dress with fishnets?! That's more up Paris Hilton's alley.

Anyway I don't care if the man wore a dress, but it seems like there's a new conservative hypocrite popping up every 1-3 months. And these people make Bill Clinton's "bimbo eruptions" look positively bland in comparison. Hookers, restroom solicitation, and auto erotic asphyxiation spring to my mind and that's just a brief recap of the last half of 2007. A dress will never compare to a guy getting off and accidentally dying in a rubber suit with a dildo up his ass.

The kicker is that nobody would likely care about the dress if this group wasn't so sexually repressed.

Even though the DUI is the only crime here (fashion aside), it's the dress that did him in. And that is the really sad part.
