Dear friends at the DU, two months of my life soon to be online
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 04:58 PM by Omaha Steve

I was the chairman of the group that tried to save Omaha's Indian Hills Theatre. For two months we fought a corporate giant. Over a dozen stories hit the AP and went around the world. Leonard Maltin did a public service promo. Letters from movie stars and more. Here is a preview of the under construction site. Please let me know about links not working etc...

2. Your "Links" page triggered my popup blocker.
Otherwise, looks good. I love the theater's curved screen (don't know if there's a proper name for it).

3. BIG K & R from an architectural historian/preservationist
I always hate to hear these stories. Corporate greed is ruining the fabric of America. Good on you Steve for your efforts!

either my wife or I will say something about how much we miss the Indian Hills theater. Such a shame they tore it down.

I saw the first Star Wars there when I was a kid, on the big screen. I'll never forget that.

8. Well, that brought back some memories. I remember seeing 2001:

A Space Odyssey there. (How ironic it was torn down in 2001.) And still have a program they sold at the theater for 2001 with an "Indian Hills" sticker on it. I also saw Dr. Zhivago, Grand Prix, and Battle of the Buldge, to name a few I can remember off the top of my head.

It was a finer time to go to the movies; buy reserved seat tickets, sit in plush seats, watch an excellent print of the film in Cinerama (or 70mm later) and at intermission(!) buy orange ade and walk around on the patio.

Thanks for trying to save the old girl. If I had still been living in Omaha then, I would have joined your effort.

10. I sat in the balcony for 2001

I have the same program with the same sticker on the cover. Small world.

11. In Unity There Is Strength...
I'm working with groups around this area to preserve and rehabilitate old theaters...Art Deco gems that once transformed lives and areas. It's not an easy deal...while people will give you the lip service, the money is hard to get. Sadly corporate and real estate interests have the influence and we've lost so many precious landmarks this way.

Good luck on your site...and have fun. Have you contacted CinemaTreasures.com? A great site about the history and restorations going on at theaters around the country.
