They are obsessed with Fidel. I guess this means Raul will take over?

How sad it will be for the Miami Cubans when they realize that even without Fidel, the majority of Cubans will NOT want to return to their racist plantation-slavery form of government.

EDIT: OOPS! I meant to post this in response to the other thread about Fidel stepping down, not as an OP. Feel free to ignore and comment on the other thread!

1. Meh. He'll probably shoot himself in the back of his head in a couple of days.
Oh well. Maybe the Cubans can improve their lot.

3. Most of the Cubans in Miami, probably have never been IN Cuba..
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 05:22 AM by SoCalDem
The old timers like MY grandparents, died long ago..and their progeny only "know" Cuba from faded old black & white pictures in photo albums..

The 1st & 2nd wavers have passed on or are very old.. The younger Cubans are Americans, and other than curiosity, they probably have no reason to go to Cuba.. They ceratinly don;t want to live there..

Cuba has lived under too many different influences for all these decades, to ever be anything like it used to be..

The "reclamation" of property would be the only reason many would want to return..and after decades of others living there, who's to say the descendants of the "original owners" would even get it back?

8. As was once expressed to be in a bar in Key West....
I mention that first so you realize that this wisdom comes from a bar in Key West (whatever you make of that)

A guy who was sailing to Cuba to trade medical supplies for artwork and I had struck up a conversation. Being not from the area I was under the impression that aside from a few people flying into Cuba Americans visiting Cuba was strictly verboten I soon learned that the guy sitting next to me (with a 60 footer moored up just outside the bar) and every waitress and bartender that I talked to had all visited Cuba ....and loved it. Okay so sailor guy tells me that all these people in Miami who think they are ever going to get their grandfather's house back are out of their minds. No way that is going to happen at this point. He went on to say that the dreams of hotels and casinos returning to the island at this point are fantasy as well BUT the gold mine that even the Cubans don't understand that they are sitting on is all those vintage Chevy's that will bring top dollar from the leisure class that has WAY TOO MUCH disposable income.

He shook my hand paid for his breakfast and sailed off.

Just something to think about.
