Pot meet Kettle -- Bush quotes regarding Castro
I am sure the irony escapes Bush.

"Eventually this transition ought to lead to free and fair elections. And I mean free, and I mean fair - not these kinds of staged elections that the Castro brothers tried to foist off as being true democracy," he said.

"There will be an interesting debate that will arise, eventually. There will be some who say 'let's promote stability' - of course, in the meantime, political prisoners will rot in prison and the human condition will remain pathetic in many cases," said Bush.

"The fundamental question really should be, what does this mean for the people in Cuba. They're the ones who suffered under Fidel Castro. They're the ones who are put in prison because of their beliefs. They're the ones who have been denied their right to live in a free society," said Bush.

"So I view this as a period of transition and it should be a beginning of the democratic transition for the people in Cuba," said the US president.

"The first step of course will be for people put in these prisons to be let out. I've met with some of the families of prisoners. It just breaks your heart to realise that people have been thrown in prison because they dared speak out," he said.

As a Floridian, the 2000 elections are still a very sore point, the one staged by the Bush Brothers.

As a citizen of the United States, I worry about the ones who suffer under the Bush regime.

1. I was awake at the crack of dawn this morning
and heard that little speech live. And I started shouting at the television and probably woke the neighbors. How dare he push democratic elections in other countries while undermining democracy here at home? I would compare it to the cobbler's children having no shoes, but it's too much of an insult to cobblers, children, leather, ....

3. From CNN: Building a democracy and blessings of liberty again

"The international community should work with the Cuban people to begin to build institutions that are necessary for democracy and eventually this transition ought to lead to free and fair elections," Bush said at a news conference in Rwanda during his five-nation tour of Africa.

"I believe that the change from Fidel Castro ought to begin ... a democratic transition."

Bush added, "The United States will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty."

Bush created the commission in 2003 to "help hasten and ease Cuba's democratic transition," according to the group's Web site.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is the commission's chair, and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, a Cuban-American, is the co-chair.

"The work of the commission will ensure that the U.S. government is fully prepared, if asked, to assist a genuine Cuban transition government committed to democracy and which will lead to Cuba's reintegration into the inter-American system," a statement on the site says.
