Cell Phone Use Linked To Increased Cancer Risk
http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206504325&cid=nl_IWK_daily

Frequent cell phone users face a 50% greater risk of developing tumors of the parotid gland than those who don't use cell phones, according to a recently published study. The parotid gland is the largest human salivary gland; it's located near the jaw and ear, where cell phones are typically held.

The reported annual incidence of salivary gland tumors is one to three per 100,000 people, according a 2006 article by Mark Kidd in Ear, Nose and Throat Journal. Based on that data, a 50% increase would raise one's theoretical high-end risk of developing a tumor in the head from 0.003% per year to 0.0045% per year.

To put the possible danger into perspective, consider that the annual incidence of death by car crash in the United States is about 14 per 100,000 people, according to Department of Transportation statistics.

The study, led by Tel Aviv University epidemiologist Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, appeared last December in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Sadetzki's findings are sure to add to confusion surrounding the already contentious debate about the health effects of cell phone radiation. Many other studies in recent years have found no increased risk of cancer due to mobile phone use, but a few have stopped short of ruling the possibility out and a few have said increased risk of cancer is small but real

2. What about The Booger Factor?
Has no one conducted a Double-Blind study on this yet?

Just what you'd expect under the Evil-Imperial Rule of the Republicon Homelanders.

Don't say you were not warned...

4. Yep wireless modems can be thrown in their too. They give off microwaves.
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 09:40 AM by cooolandrew
I kept my old modem thankfully, started getting pains when I used my wireless, use it only sparingly now. Best to text than anything else with cell phones if using them make call as short as possible.

13. Microwaves are non-ionizing radiation.
They cannot alter your DNA or cause tumors. Intense microwave radiation could cause burns, but that's it. There is no need to go through life scared of everything.

25. Do you use a microwave to heat your coffee?
The amount of "microwaves" that a wireless modem emits is substantially less than a regular kitchen microwave oven and certainly less than you'll get by walking outside in the sunlight.

6. "Nerve Cell Damage in Mammalian Brain after Exposure to Microwaves from GSM mobile phones:
Salford, LG, AE Brun, JL Eberhardt, L Malmgren and BRR Persson. 2003.

Nerve cell damage in mammalian brain after exposure to microwaves
from GSM mobile phones

Environmental Health Perspectives 111:881-883.

http://www.protectingourhealth.org/newscience/learning/2003/2003-0129salfordetal.htm

Salford et al. document serious neuronal damage in rat brains
following exposure to microwave radiation from a cell phone, at
levels comparable to what people would experience during normal use.
Damage to nerve cells was observed in several places within the
brain, including the cortex, hippocampus and basal ganglia. It was
associated with evidence of leakage of proteins through the
blood-brain barrier. The authors express concern that "after some
decades of (often) daily use, a whole generation of
users may suffer negative effects, perhaps as early as middle age."

In a companion news story in the issue of Environmental Health
Perspectives in which the research is published, the journal
comments: "It might be time to get serious about using your headset
when talking on your mobile phone and encouraging your family members
to do the same."

What did they do? Salford et al. exposed rats to microwave radiation
from a GSM cell phone, varying the intensity of radiation across a
range that would be experienced by mobile phone users. The rats were
contained within plastic trays inside a specially constructed wooden
box that allowed free movement, other than to prevent direct contact
with the source of radiation. One set of animals was placed in the
box without turning on the transmitter; they served as a control
group. The others were exposed to peak power densities of 0.24, 2.4
and 24 Watts/square meter (which translates to 2 milliWatts per kg,
20 mW/kg and 200 mW/kg, respectively). Each group contained 8 animals.

After a 50-day waiting period, during which the rats were monitored
for behavioral abnormalities, Salford et al. killed the animals,
carefully removed their brains, and studied them by applying stains
and albumin antibodies that allowed detection of abnormalities.
What did they find? As expected, both control and experimental
animals had albumin within the hypothalamus. This is normal.
Exposed animals, however, were much more likely to have albumin
leaking from blood vessels in inappropriate locations.
Adapted from Salford et al.

7. Wonder WHO funded the studies that found NO increased risk of cancer?
That's how the companies who stand to LOSE the lost keep the truth from the potential cancer victims.

The cigarette companies have done it. The businesses that dump heavy toxins (pesticides, etc.) have done it. They do it to protect their profits, not the consumer.

I feel sorry for the children using cellphones today. THEY will be the ones with huge problems in the future.

Because of the radiation I've gotten rid of my telephone and turned off the electricity in my house - it was leaking out of the sockets. I only go out now wearing a lead lined hat.

I used to use smoke signals, but that whole second hand smoke thing was difficult for the neighbors.

And I will only connect my abacus to the internets with organically grown cotton string, spun during a full moon by Swedish virgin vegans.

Please note that there has been NO INCREASE IN BRAIN CANCER.

On edit: will the other scientists in this thread please come forward?
Rats are NOT humans and this Japanese Study looks AT HUMANS

There are far worse things to worry about!

...I'm reminded of the Joe Jackson song, "Cancer."

Everything gives you cancer
There's no cure, there's no answer
Everything gives you cancer.

And, what is the main cause of death?
Life.

20. Do you see some disagreement between the 2 studies?
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 11:57 AM by Jim__
The one you're citing is talking about brain cancer. The study cited in the OP is about cancer of the parotid gland. I don't know why you're raising the issue of rats. Both cited studies were on humans.

Also, the study cited in the OP talks about frequent use of cell phones, the brain cancer study refers to regular cell phone use. I haven't seen the definitions of these terms, but then I haven't seen the original articles either.

17. for what its worth
a couple years I met a person who was a pipeliner and he was one of the employees who have a union job title, can't remember what it was right now, anyways his job required him to spend a lot of time on his cell phone back to his bosses etc. A while back he woke up one morning with a head ache and after a few days and it didn't go away he went to the doctor and in a week or so he found out he had a brain tumor right by where he held his cell phone. He passed in a matter of a little less than 60 days after getting the news it was cancerous. A good man he was too, I wonder if maybe there is something to the connection of brain cancer and cell phones. When I use mine and I'm here at home and i'm going to be talking for anything much more than a hi and a by I use the ear thingy. Just to be on the safer side.

Here it is:

Of course, this only works with phones with an external antenna. If you wrapped the antenna, you wouldn't be able to make or receive calls.
