No rocking on new school chairs

Mr Wates designed the chair as he was irritated by pupils leaning back
A former teacher has designed a school chair which he claims is impossible to tip backwards.

Tom Wates gave up his teaching post in Blackheath in south-east London to design the 'Max Chair'.

It has curved legs that prevent it rocking and provides more support for the lower back, forcing children to sit up straight.

His company has already received orders for 1,500 chairs from 18 schools having launched the product three weeks ago.

Mr Wates, 34, said it is physically impossible to swing the chair backwards more than a few centimetres.

"The reason I went into it was because of the irritation of children leaning back," said Mr Wates who gave up teaching in July 2007.

Been a tough week, and it's only Tuesday.

Wife and daughter out of town, and I am sad and lonely. Although the dog has been humping my leg...

2. My kid's teacher allows exercise balls as chairs.
Half the class uses those instead of standard chairs.

6. Oh, the classic thud of a kid hitting the floor backwards!
Always boys. Girls didn't need to look "cool" by balancing on the back two legs.

11. Well this will present a challenge to some kid
I figure about 2 days in the classroom will prove this not to be true.

12. Wonder if sticking tennis balls on the feet nulls the effect.
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 02:57 PM by woodsprite
Every kid in my son's class had to take in 4 tennis balls. It was a 'graded' homework assignment. The teacher slit them and they put them on feet of each of the chairs. Cuts down on the noise level. I had 25 kids in my class when I was going thru elementary school. We NEVER had tennis balls on our chair legs. Do you think that teachers were built stronger back then? I know they carried bigger sticks :)
