BREAKING: Jason Leopold No Longer Employed By Truthout
Source: www.truthout.org Letter from Marc Ash Executive Director

To Our Readership and Friends,

Jason Leopold is no longer employed by Truthout.

Jason is a truly gifted reporter, and his efforts on behalf of Truthout have been greatly appreciated.

There may be some speculation that this announcement is connected in some way to Truthout's reporting of the Karl Rove indictment matter. It is not. At the time of our reporting on the Rove matter we stood by the factual accuracy of our reports, and we stand by them now.

We sincerely wish Jason the best of luck.

Marc Ash, Executive Director - t r u t h o u t director@truthout.org

10. I just got this...
Dear Friends,

I have decided to leave Truthout after three years in the trenches to
start my own web-based, non-profit political magazine to be called
BackgroundBriefing.org <http://backgroundbriefing.org/> . The website is
currently in production and I hope to launch a beta version in mid-March
with a full rollout in June.

I have been committed to independent journalism for nearly a decade and
will continue to report on the most pressing issues this country faces
and will continue to face long after Bush is out of office.

In the meantime, I will continue to dig for the truth and will report
sporadically on the issues while setting up my new venture. I greatly
appreciate the support you all have given me over the years and hope you
will all become readers of BackgroundBriefing.org

Stay tuned.

Jason Leopold
Editor-in-Chief

12. He might want to actually register the domain name as part of his "preproduction"
As of a couple of minutes ago it was still available for anyone who wanted to make a couple of bucks selling it back to Leopold.

18. ha
wouldn't that suck! maybe it just shows that, but he put in for it and it hasn't been updated?

I guess it'll be a site devoted to breaking news that doesn't happen.

19. Actually, you are the one who is presenting false info. The domain IS registered to Leopold.

21. I never said Leopold was putting out false info (about his domain)
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 08:18 AM by salvorhardin
I just said he might want to actually register it... which he finally did. As of the time I posted he hadn't.

Notice that it was created on Feb 20th at 00:42:35 UTC. That's 7:42PM EST. My prior post was at 7:13PM EST. This means the domain was registered a little less than a half hour after I posted previously that it was unregistered. So no... I wasn't putting out false info about Leopold's domain. That's more than can be said about Truthout and Leopold's Karl Rove story.

24. The tubes were probably clogged
It usually takes 24 hours or so for changes like that to update anyway.

25. You're thinking of DNS propagation and that's no longer the case
Unless your personal ISP doesn't update their DNS records in a timely fashion. Usually it's no more than 5 minutes for changes to be reflected in DNS records although caching at various stages along the way can complicate the issue for some people.

But that wouldn't apply here. GoDaddy would not have said the name was available if it had already been registered. And since the name was registered with GoDaddy it's their own database that was being queried. Nah, it looks like Leopold or his agents hadn't registered the domain name before they announced their new site. Considering Leopold's reporting I'm not surprised to see this kind of sloppiness, but nevertheless I'm glad they got the domain they wanted.

23. They're *still* standing by the Rove indictment?
Uh-uh. If the story were worth standing by, there would have been follow-ups. They need either to recant it or to substantiate it.
