Anybody watching Frontline "Rules of Engagement"?
About the events in Haditha. What struck me is that they used unsworn statements at the hearing. I assume that means they could lie without penalty? But I am horrified by the fact that they chased after and killed kids, especially. The Iraqis were not allowed to be part of the investigation and of course their accounts differed considerably. What an ugly business all around. I am not inclined to believe "our" side at all. I am watching this because I do not know if this is simply a knee-jerk reaction on my part.

Of course it's an illegal war anyway and far too many people have died at our hands. As far as I am concerned it is all a war crime.

1. NBC's nightly news did a segment on tonight's "Frontline." I never saw that before.

11. It's followed here by Independent Lens, also a good series.
Tonight it's about towns that expelled black residents, like Cumming, GA.

13. Oh man, the mindset exhibited there
Here the U.S. military is OCCUPYING the country after an ILLEGAL invasion, and they're blaming the people for supporting the insurgency. :grr:

They try to discredit the eye witness accounts as "insurgent propaganda." :grr:

16. A familiar refrain - the Marine's gun "jammed"
I heard this about M16s in Vietnam, M4s in Iraq, and now that M249 SAW carried by that Marine in Haditha.

On the other hand, AKs used by the insurgents almost never jam, break, etc. It's a design that dates back to the late 40's, and it's still going strong.

19. Yes, and in my area, it will re-air at 12 am (Central time)
on my PBS station.

I knew I'd be watching election results tonight so I planned to catch this Frontline episode in the later timeslot.

I heard a good discussion on NPR yesterday about this particular program, not done necessarily as a "promo," but a good discussion with the guy who produced the episode. He took questions from callers and had very good answers. He seemed very unbiased, also, which made me want to watch the show even more.

Hope to be able to stay awake to catch the (new) Nova episode also re-airing right after that late timeslot for Frontline, too -- 1 am Central time -- "Ape Genius."

A reassessment of the intellectual abilities of the great apes

20. Really makes you think
It's so easy to take an easy position on these things. Then you hear the story from all it's sides and .....wow, this is a lot more complicated than i thought.

Like Rashomon - one of my favorite movies.
