1. and wont that send a message. "only shoot missles at us on cloudy days"
I also remember that they missed the first few shootdown attempts a while ago when they were testing the 'missle umbrella' system. I hope that I am not in the path of any debris myself.

2. It's a poorly written article
many technical faults -- SM-3 is not a heat seeking missile -- it is part IR, part AEGIS guided. Secondly, the system itself is not part of the national missile defense shield like the land based interceptors or the ABM-- however it clearly benefits from those advancements clearly.

3. Yes BUT this point was so important that they stated it twice
The attempted shootdown was approved by President Bush out of concern that toxic fuel on board the satellite could crash to earth, the Defense Department has said.

Officials will know nearly immediately whether the missile has hit the satellite, but it will take a day or two to know whether the fuel tank has been destroyed, officials said.

18. Hilarious!
And the American military cultists still run around thumping their chests about their glorious military yet they can't beat small insurgencies or defend even themselves on rainy days.

What the US needs is another Grenada-like cakewalk to restore the self-esteem of their rapidly faltering Stormtroopers.

I hear Lichtenstien is relatively undefended. Maybe * can whip up some lies about them let the Hometown Heroes go to work on them with cluster bombs & WP?

23. The Irish are waiting with baited breath
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/article3447948.ece

A US Navy warship is moving into position in preparation to shoot down an out-of-control spy satellite carrying a toxic payload and orbiting over Ireland.

The satellite, named USA 193, should be visible from Belfast at around 6:38pm if the sky is clear. It will take nearly four minutes to travel across the sky.

However all systems appear to be “go” for the launch order to destroy the rogue satellite, which is about the size of a school bus. The US Navy has prepared for the mission by modifying three SM-3 missiles aboard Aegis ships to strike the satellite. The missile carries a "kinetic kill vehicle" – designed essentially to destroy the satellite by smashing into it.

The missile is likely to be fired tonight from USS Lake Erie, a Ticonderoga-class missile cruiser situated west of Hawaii. If it misses, the Navy has two other missiles on standby for launch, probably tomorrow or Friday.

25. they say it worked...
but there was not breaking news on MSNBC. In fact, I didn't even hear it worked until after 11:00. Was it really just a play for HAARP and weather modification technology? Maybe that was what was onboard and they didn't want Russia or China to find out we've been doing it....I agree, and now the Chinese, who are working on their own weather modification for the Olympics will know that our missiles don't work in cloudy weather. Oh brother!
