Race For Udall’s New Mexico Seat Draws A Crowd
By Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff
The open race for northern New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District has drawn a significant roster of candidates despite its heavy Democratic leaning after Democratic Rep. Tom Udall cleared the way by joining New Mexico’s two other House members — Republicans Heather A. Wilson and Steve Pearce — to run for the open Senate seat.
On the Democratic side, Santa Fe developer Don Wiviott leads the field in terms of fundraising, thanks to a $325,000 loan he made to his campaign. Wiviott had raised $346,000 and had $299,000 on hand, as of Dec. 31. The second-best funded candidate was Ben Ray Lujan, the chairman of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission and son of powerful New Mexico House Speaker Ben Lujan, who raised $104,000 and had $92,000 on hand by the end of the year.
Jon Adams, a lawyer who also served as assistant attorney general for New Mexico, reported raising $33,000 and had $15,000 on hand while Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya reported raising $8,000 with $5,000 on hand. Lawyer Rudy Martin filed with the FEC on Dec. 31 while former state Indian Affairs Secretary Benny Shendo Jr. filed in January; neither had filed campaign finance information.
Competing on the Republican side are Dan East, a contractor from Rio Rancho, and former Domenici aide Marco Gonzales, neither of whom has filed campaign finance reports with the FEC.
CQ Politics rates the race as Safe Democratic because the district has a strong Democratic voting history. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry won 54 percent of the district’s vote in 2004 and Udall won his fifth term in 2006 with 75 percent of the vote.
