"This baby is black. It is a dark, ugly thing." Utah Sen. Chris Buttars
Sen. Chris Buttars referred to Utah Bill SB48 as the ugly baby bill.
During a passionate speech, he picked up on the metaphor, saying,

"This baby is black. It is a dark, ugly thing."

The NAACP's Jeanetta Williams called for his resignation and the remark
has caused something of a firestorm, with online comments, e-mails and letters
to the editor.

Majority Leader Curtis Bramble(R) said he spent 45 minutes
with Buttars in Senate offices Friday morning talking about a range of issues.
"He was questioning, last session and during the interim, whether to run
for re-election because of his health," Bramble said.

Resignation did not come up during recent conversations, said Valentine and Bramble.

"I think the case is over and done," said Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan.
"He'll make his decision about his future in the Legislature in three weeks."

1. No shock there. Racism. Republicanism.
One does expect those to go hand in hand.

7. On the other hand, Karl Malone never gets pulled over
all the cops recognize him. Seriously. He once mentioned that in an interview.

8. It'd be impossible for them NOT to recognize him.
Outside of the other Jazz players, he's probably the only gigantic black man in the state. Plus, from what I understand, he's kind of in their mindset politically anyway, you know, racism aside.

4. In the interest of playing devil's advocate...
I've been trying to spin that quote to see if there was any way that it might not have been disgustingly racist.

So far, I got nothing.
