Do you ever get really frustrated with the logic and arguments that some people use? |
|
Well arm yourself with this handy guide to the many different forms of false logic. See how many examples you can find on DU. http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/acadwrite/logic.html#DISTRACTION%20FROM%20THE%20ARGUMENT

1. Shifted burden of proof and strawman are the most common I see on the net |
|
But that's probably because I ignore people who do "attack the speaker" and "irrelevant material"

3. Someone posted a thread that said "Freepers attack Clinton just like people on DU |
|
attack Clinton, ergo People on DU are just like Freepers." How the hell does a thought like that get past a person's reasoning filter?

4. Well, that argument is based on two flawed ideas: |
|
1. HRC is a democrat, and therefore we can never disagree with her, her positions, what she does and how she does it. In other words, "Party Loyalty"
HRC and any of our candidates are PUBLIC SERVANTS. We have the right and duty to hold them to our needs as a nation.
2. That any criticism equates us with every other critical group.
Plenty of people hate Bush, including some Freepers. There is nothing that says said groups agree on anything else, though.

5. I see the "Slippery Slope" arguement in the Gungeon and GD quite often... |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 02:43 PM by madinmaryland
Slippery Slope:
The writer bases the claim on the assumption that if a particular event occurs, so will other undesirable events. However, there are no reasons to believe that the subsequent events will occur. This fallacy is usually caused by fear.
"If we put limits on the right to bear arms, soon all of our Constitutionally-given rights will be taken away."

8. Now THERE'S an alleged "fallacy" that I find questionable. |
|
There's no guarantee that certain things will lead to even worse things, but sometimes that's PRECISELY how things go. Look at the suspension of certain constitutional protections during the up-tick of the Drug War. They were able to test our tolerance for certain activities and take them one step farther.
It IS a slippery slope. Every inch we give them allows them to push just that much farther. Ignoring how often this actually happens and discounting it as a "fallacy" seems remarkably naive and myopic.
