Updated plans call for the House to adjourn Aug. 1 for a five-week summer recess that will include the two major parties’ presidential nominating conventions.
The legislative calendar announced previously had called for the August recess to begin a week later.
A new calendar posted on the Web site of House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer , D-Md., shows that to make up for the longer August recess, the House will be in session five days a week for the three weeks starting Sept. 8.
Three more recesses are scheduled between now and the long summer break:
• March 17-28 – spring recess.
• May 26-30 – Memorial Day recess.
• June 30 - July 4 – Independence Day recess.
The House’s targeted adjournment date remains Sept. 26, but Congress is unlikely to finish its business by that date. Not since 1996 have lawmakers avoided a lame-duck session in an election year.
Election Day is Nov. 4.
