The Repubs are taking McCain out. This is a planned hit.

It reeks of a GOP take-down. And we already know the GOP is cozy with the NYT. Just ask Valerie Plame.

17. But my point is--if John McCain is by far their strongest candidate, and he ALREADY
has a huge ugly scandal around him, it doesn't really matter who they get to stand in his place.

Their remaining candidates are a joke, their President has never been more unpopular, and the election is pretty much in the bag.

Would Romney un-suspend his campaign? I wonder if Huckabee had any kind of understanding that this was about to break, since he refused to drop out of the race....

He just suspended his campaign.

The neocons seemed to be backing him above anyone else (why, I dont know. He's not a true conservative either.), so he could concievably reenter the race.

they are just getting that "I told ya so" in place so they can point it out when the next chance to elect a certifiable wingnut comes along.

At this point they pray that is 4 years after Obama gets elected.

I just can't figure out why. Who do they have in the pipe-line?

Huckabee would get everyone slightly left of "Hitler" (not Godwin's Law; just a notorious fascist) out in droves and Democrats are already voting in the primaries 2, 3 and sometimes 4 to 1 over the repubs.

Who is in the pipeline?

Can't be one who's already dropped out.

Is it Jeb?

edit: spelling

20. It's possible McCain is tossing this out now rather than it leaking out in October
I read a paper regarding how temporal distances affects ones willingness to forgive transgressions. Basically, it said time may not actually heal all wounds but it helps make a person more inclined to forgive hurts done to them.

There's a very good chance that this entire scandal will get lost in the minds of the Republican voter between now and November. It will be buried under slander and lies about the Democratic candidate.

I don't appreciate those who brought us the Bush presidency. Twice. I wouldn't have spared one moment of regret for their lost votes if they'd have decided to stay home rather than go and cast their ballot in either of those elections.

McCain's got no reason to release his delegates. Romney or Huckabee have to win almost every state from here on out to get the nomination without a *choke* brokered convention.

38. 'Tis odd, the timing.
I think McCain matched up well with Hillary...traditional Republican vs. traditional Democrat. But it's pretty obvious watching Obama's recent run the past few weeks that McCain is like the caretaker on the Titantic. He's doomed. He's powerless to change course, but he's the guy who'll be remembered as the guy at the helm when the ship went down.

He probably knows it too. The whole reason he stayed in the race was to recoup his campaign costs through public financing. Maybe he wants off the Titanic and the Republicans want someone who can match up better against Obama? Maybe Romney? His campaign operation was suspended, not disbanded. He's got a big investment in winning. Hmmmm. Maybe the RNC got this story out to help expedite McCain's decision to exit now while they can still make a race out it? This is fascinating stuff and I don't think an 8 year old story gets The Big Play in a Republican corporate media environment without some hidden orchestration by people with a vested interest in maintaining control of the White House.

I'm betting McCain is gone bt the end of the week....he'll get the full media treatment, decry the old politics, probably accuse the Democrats of dirty tricks, decides to do the honorable thing for his Party (and probably has all of his expenses liquidated in the process)and enjoy his remaining years as a Senator.

It is not possible for Hickabee or any of the other republicans to catch up with mccain in terms of delegates now.

There's not really any need to pin this on rove anyway. His "black baby" smear was one of the most disgusting things in political history. Even if he is responsible for this, it pales in comparison to that.

I hope all of this turns out to be true and it will sink the mccain candidacy, but karl rove had nothing to do with this. It benefits the Democratic nominee and instead of hatching bizarre conspiracy theories, you should be happy that we will win the presidency.
