Phoenix businessman missing after Dana Point trip

A Phoenix businessman disappeared in Southern California after arriving in Dana Point, Calif., to close what authorities have been told is a million-dollar deal.


Local businessman Robert Lee Vendrick, 71, took a US Airways flight to Long Beach on Friday to meet his investment partner, Gary Shawkey, authorities said. But when Vendrick didn't return on Monday, his wife called local authorities in Orange County to report him missing, Jim Amormino spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

Vendrick was to meet Shawkey for a "highly-secretive" deal to collect on a million-dollar investment with some "highly-placed government officials," Amormino said.

Although authorities were told the pair were closing a multi-million dollar deal, no government officials have been identified in this deal, Amormino said.

"This is all highly suspicious," Amormino said.

When police arrived at the hotel where Vendrick was staying they found his medication, his clothes neatly folded and the fireplace was still on, Amormino said.
