I didn't know the answer to your question so I decided an innocent trip to Wikipedia would help. Big mistake. Since your thread spurred the research, you will now have to know too much too. :D
So he dated a stripper back in the day. Who knew? He then married Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia. She was married to a friend of his but they got divorced and she married John instead.
He met the younger Cindy Lou in 1979, fell in love with her, and then divorced Carol two years later and married Cindy soon after. His kids were pissed and didn't go to the wedding. Oh, and Carol was in a bad accident in 1969 and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere else that she was crippled because of it. According to wikipedia, they're on good terms though.
