Last week marked the two-year anniversary of Vice President Dick Cheney’s shooting of David Whittington. In a little-noticed interview, the vice president stood by his decision to shoot Whittington in the face.
According to the best intelligence available at the time, there were quail in the brush. Everybody believed at the time there were quail in the brush. There was a consensus among neo-con thinkers that the quail in the bush were a threat to the well-being of the citizenry. Unfortunately, the quail in the bush turned out to be a 78-year-old man.
No matter to Cheney. He still insists, even knowing what he knows today, he still would have made the decision to shoot Whittington in the face.
For his part, President Bush refuses to repudiate Cheney’s shooting Whittington in the face. Regardless of what the current mood of the country is, he feels that history will show the decision to shoot Whittington in the face a wise one, and the administration’s legacy of shooting supporters in the face will be looked upon with high regard, and future generations will be glad Cheney shot Whittington in the face.
The lesson in this for the rest of us is never, ever go hunting with Dick Cheney. I don’t care what kind of lucrative contracts you’re trying to land or energy regulations you’re trying to get lifted. If he believes intelligence dictates it, he’ll shoot you in the face and never look back.
